Goblin Civilian Soldiers?

So, my intrepid adventurer wandered into a major human town, and immediately found it being swarmed by goblins who seemed to be generally fleeing from human soldiers.

Curious thing, most of the goblins were technically civilians, yet they reacted to my character with hostility, so I assumed they were an invasion and killed them without restraint.

Eventually, I wandered into the keep, where a goblin priest tried to kill me (I slew him) and then the goblin lady spat, inspiring lethal retaliation. I claimed the keep for the humans.

Still, it seems odd that goblin invasions consist so much of civilian combatants.

Also, time has passed, and every time I return, it's the same scene.

Is this just one continuous invasion? Or how am I to interpret this?

If it is prior to uh, 42.04 or so then it's the weirdness with criminal populations and constant insurrections, if it's 43.05 then is there a library nearby, if not it might be weirdness due to goblin ethics which shows up when they move somewhere and you cause the game to start responding locally in consideration of those ethics.

It's 43.05. There's a temple in town I haven't explored yet, and some very extensive goblin encampments very nearby.

In gameplay, I've been assuming it's an ongoing war, but it's getting kind of wearying, even though I've killed 105 goblins and counting so far, mostly in the town.

The way the goblin skeletons clutter the town is also mildly unsatisfying. You'd think they'd decompose at some point...

It might be a revolution. All sorts of people start fighting each other during revolutions.

Is there any way to tell what the actual situation is?

Also, is there a way to stop it?

you probably are in a goblin town, a town was built by humans then abandoned, later goblins settled in the town. tjey still attack you because you probably are form a civ that is in war with goblins, so you are killing civilians

Ask about troubles. People will usually tell you if they're being invaded or having a revolution.

Run like hell, that's what they do to me too.

The "goblin town" makes sense, especially since it's surrounded by goblin enclaves. Of course, this means my character is engaging in ethnic cleansing... :o

Speaking of which, guy wandered south to check on one of his holdings and was killed in a large goblin ambush. He maimed most of his attackers as his two associates were slain. Based on legends, it looks like he walked into the middle of one insurrection, and another happened around the time of his death.

Because of just how goblins are, there are LOTS of insurrections, a angry sesspit of power hungry folks is sure to boil over. I personally think they need a sheriff and militia generated positions too for civs in order to keep the balance of power. If a expedition leader to 'own' a site is set with modding, between every dark pit and tower, they'll all be a faction opposed to the capital in some way or form via a intrigue of power and also having egible [FORTIFICATIONS] for taking titles inside the goblin civ making the 'master' a target and actually claimable position.

Having a police force by modding in a site militia equivalent (and/or in the same militia role keeps things in check with [RESPONSIBLITY: LAW_ENFORCMENT)  because the only law goblins endorse and punish via captial is treason. I like to personally make my goblin executioners axemen because they have access to a wider variety of giant axes and its more fun overall and also champions because that's also appropriate.

Goblin militias will roam around sites patrolling with these enhancements, if you make them even the tiniest bit upset with a unsheathed weapon or a  wrong move they'll kill you in lethal combat, otherwise you can walk around at your own discretion with lots of grumbly goblins (this is affected by [KILL ENEMY:REQUIRED and KILL NEUTRAL:PERSONAL MATTER] which checks if the personal unit has any explicit reason to fight and kill enemy required forces no-quarter combat with enemies. Make a attempt on their master within range and the military goblins will swarm to punish you.

My methods of making local militia also means i can embark as a hearth-soldier from within my modded goblin civ raws which have all pops controllable and site controllable so i start off from inside the civ.


The idea for the [CONQUERED SITE] additional nobles was to ensure that via the militia policing the conquered site (lets say a dwarf fortress with or without the population replaced with goblins) it could maintain 'order' and stop villainous attacks on the overseer noble and have them punished by death via the "hired executioner" and this actually works very well for maintaining rare conquered sites.

So even if you run off as a adventurer to 'liberate' and assert power over a place that has been conquered or occupied by goblins, you'll still be in hot water for assault at penalty for death (under charges of treason) & if you succeed you'll have your own little personal army on site

if there were goblins with civilian jobs (woodcutter, mason, fisher, etc) then it most probably is just a goblin town and they attack you because goblins are from an enemy civilization.

That too, during wartime they HAVE to attack you [ETHIC:KILL_ENEMY:REQUIRED]and are hostile relations meaning that they will be easily aggrovated by aggression (attacking them/not putting weapon away with Q/asking hostile questions) to fast track to fighting.
