PSA: Stories, not rumors
« on: November 03, 2016, 12:11:45 pm »

I did a quick google search or two to see if this was common practice, but if you're trying to score some fame by bragging about the forgotten beasts and night trolls you killed, it's significantly easier using the "Perform->Tell a story" way of doing it than bringing up a specific rumor. Just select a site and filter on the lair where you did the deed, and you can go through a short storytelling sesh to inform everyone in earshot of your exploits. You can even stumble all over the details. You'll still get the same credit.

I noticed a couple of cases where my performance was interrupted on larger crowds, which I theorize happened whenever someone walked over my tile. Avoid that, and telling an entire tavern that you killed Pomus the Repentent Storm with Pomus the Repentent Storm's upper right arm is as easy as a few keystrokes and no eye strain.

Too bad we don't still have that convenient "recent successes" option from 34.11.

that's probably from you telling the tale than the event.
so going into bard and telling tales about how someone stubs your toe will net you more fame than mentioning a rumor.

Well, it's the only way to get fame properly for killing undead critters, can't directly spread that rumor until you spread it via stories sufficiently.

I noticed that storytelling worked well for that only recently.  It's very handy.  Also "brag about violent deeds" now *works*.  The only problem being that you don't get to choose the violent deed to brag about.  The other thing I discovered is that if you want to tell rumours about recent events, it's dramatically easier to page *backwards* through the list, since there are only a couple of pages of things at the end of the list that you need to get through.

Although there are arguably much more important things to do, I'm secretly wishing that conversations get a bit of an overhaul.  Lately I've been trying to play less violent adventurers and I've found that the conversations, storytelling, music, poetry, etc has a seed of a decent game in it.  The biggest problem is layout of information (i.e. you are overloaded with a mixture of useless and useful information without knowing which is which).  The next biggest problem is lack of feedback on the results of what you are doing.  It's so hard to tell if *anything* is implemented and a lot of the effects are so subtle that you can't tell if it is doing anything at all.

which is why I really should go work on that dfhack convo script to unlock all the dialog options the game kinda leaves out.
because from what I seen there loads of insane content and abilities lock up in talking.

That one quest gather and the keyword slew/condensed lines scripts are amazing, they're the main reason I miss full dfhack still.
