River is Frozen

Its summer and the river still hasn't unfrozen.

Is there a way to fix this with dfhack?

It may not be a bug.  One of the things you can view before you embark is temperature.  If you embarked in the Dwarf Fortress equivalent of the Arctic, you may be lucky to get unfrozen rain 1 month of the year.  Every world is unique, and sometimes the depth of gameplay can be frustrating when you miss stuff, but it just gets better as you learn to embrace it.

If you like this embark, I suggest looking for water in the caverns.

thats kind of a cop out.

the tempature read COLD, not freezing, so it should thaw in the summer, unless it somehow gets hotter later on.

Also, its raining and its below freezing.

If you don't like temperature, you can just switch it off in the standard options. You don't need dfhack.

Also "cold" and "freezing" are general descriptions of the region (cold and really, really cold). What's the actual temperature? I imagine dfhack can tell you somehow.

It probably won't stay frozen all summer long.

Sounds like you built near a pole and or at high altitude. It will likely thaw for at least a month or two each summer if you aren't in a freezing biome. "Cold" biomes generally describe areas like the far north of Alaska and Siberia that remain frozen almost the entire year except in the very middle of summer. "Frozen" biomes are like Antartica where there is no thaw ever. What you probably were looking for was "temperate" were the rivers freeze for half the year or less. As with everything in DF there are probably exceptions to these rules, but as far as I know "cold" biomes always have at least a brief thaw.

If a source of liquid surface water is a priority for you when embarking then you must make sure there is both a source of water and a warm enough climate for said water to be liquid at some point in the year. Even temperate climates may leave you with frozen rivers for half the year.
