Do dwarves ever buy anything from shops ?
Havent seen this happened once. Nobles just claim stuff, but ordinary guys (even with LOADS of cash) cant.

Not to mention the shops are almost as bad as Meeting Halls, all free dwarves just mill around them doing nothing...

I've seen it.  Look for the 'go shopping' job in your jobs list.  Only my very richest dwarves seem to do it.

I have four shops.  I built them just too see what kinds there were in the game.  

I have a lot of folks buying stuff.  Espically clothes as most of my starting garments are worn out now (an 'X' displayed before item).

Oh yes, they "go shopping" all right, but never buy anything. I had a dwarf with 3000 coins in his pocket, and he never bought anything. Have 4 shops, crafts, clothes, 2 general shops. Nobody ever bought anything. The only things dwarves put in their rooms are damaged clothes.

I have had a few dwarves go shopping, by the items sitting around in their rooms anyway. Could be wrong though.
