Just a suggestion , as it stands the main webpage ( http://bay12games.com/dwarves/ ) are giving me and a few other people (with different disorders such as astigmatism) trouble or even vision problems ( in my case lines appears in my vision for up to a minute after reading the text on the main webpage ) .

If possible it would be nice if an option could be put out so that we could invert this or have another kind of layout of the main webpage , I really love to read the news on the main page but lately as the sight problem has become a bit worse it's a harder strain on both vision and head.

People with astigmatism (aproximately 50% of the population) find it harder to read white text on black than black text on white. Part of this has to do with light levels: with a bright display (white background) the iris closes a bit more, decreasing the effect of the “deformed” lens; with a dark display (black background) the iris opens to receive more light and the deformation of the lens creates a much fuzzier focus at the eye.

Hopefully this could be done in the future.

Yes i do know of a couple of "apps" that do help my web-brower to do this, but since I do use several devices not every one does support this and getting the functionality on the webpage helps a lot with it, again no hurry

sounds like a problem i had. since i got glasses reading is much easier[/offtopic]

but maybe you'd rather ask the devs (of such apps) to improve/port their apps to other devices. many devices have built in functionality to improve readability. in my naive mind there's not much to do. just remove background images and all colors from html/css and replace them with the colors users likes or needs... but i don't know much about such things.
asking a couple those devs seems imo a better approach than asking a zillion website providers even if it's just df now, in some point in the future you might appreciate another website and gotta ask them again, and i doubt it will just be two websites... asking the devs is asking (in best case) once and get a solution which works for all and even those websites which don't exist yet

It's true.
I've changed this forum to another colour scheme and it helps a lot and also the main page with the help of an app , but sometimes when you access DF from a work pc such apps might not be applicable due to office / work limitations.
And as many other people I guess I'm not the only one to check the adress for some news from time to time.

More and more website developers are at least aware of the problems some people do have with the black / white contrasts due to vision trouble ( In my case due to brain surgery and cancer ) and have made those websites have more options to increase user friendlyness.

Anyway as I said not a big problem , and perhaps if Toady does read this suggestion he might do it in the future if he ever does change anything / redesign the website.

when you hit f12 in the browser, does some weird complicated looking tab appear? which browser do you use? and did i understand right that you'd prefer black background with white text? what about the font size?

Quite the opposite in fact , White background with black text is what helps avoid the lines appearing in my vision.
Hitting F12 in chrome opens up the code content of the webpages I do visit , at work we use other browsers though.

All major webbrowsers have a 'change code of webpage directly' functionality these days, it's just not hotkeyed the same way everywhere. Even internet explorer and edge. Unless your company is still running IE 6 or 7, in which case I would start making friends with the sysadmin.

guess that is what i meant. just the dev console can be deactivated. i have seen some badly crippled browsers out there. in case the dev console works, putting three lines on the bottom of dwstyle.css could help until the website has some barrier free version:

to find it, open the dev console, in chrome, the easiest way for non-techies might just right click somewhere on the website and click on inspect. then click on source (blue), click the |> triangles  (red) and double click dwstyle.css. scroll all the way down (green) and at the bottom, insert the above code.

if you want black on white, switch the #000000 into #ffffff and the #ffffff into #000000. more about colore you find at http://www.w3schools.com/colors/colors_picker.asp choose a color on the on the left and copy the #foo code on the right.

to increase the font size, add "font-size: x% to the li.dev_progress, so it looks like that:

   background: #000000;
   font-size: 200%;
}

200% means its twice the size, guess you know math.

right click, inspect element, then click "style editor" (blue), the file is already opened, just scroll down (green) and add the lines above.

Putnam has made a reddit bot that copies the devlogs and posts them to https://www.reddit.com/r/dwarffortress/. Subreddit default is white background and black text.
