Fortress wide punch up.

I had a bard go beserk for failing to complete an artifact. He punced one dwarf and then other guys got involved which led to a fortress wide punch up and about 17 casualties is this intended behavier or a bug?

Kind of intended, sort of bug.  The bard flipping out and starting a fight is intended, the other guys joining in is intended.  The fortress scale brawl that ends with multiple deaths is the sort of bug, in that it is the logical outcome of the way the game currently functions, but not exactly the intended behavior.

uh I think I understand, I know that unarmed combat shouldn't be that deadly... There were skull fragments through everyone brain.

The excessive lethality of unarmed is one part of the problem, the other is the way the game sets combat level flags, and loyalty flags.  What it comes down to is that several of the systems are incomplete or outright placeholders, eventually they will be replaced or improved so that things are a bit more realistic.

An entire town made up of constantly drunk people who use their beards to carve stone devolving into violent anarchy at the drop of a hat seems plausible.

This will be solved when damage to fists is implemented (as threatened in a fairly recent podcast). All but the toughest ninja masters will run squealing to the hospital before they ever get to punch a skull to bits. Hopefully...

--Oh, and the fortress guard are meant to get involved (but don't). So when that's working there should be less overall casualties (but perhaps the survival rate of the participants will be a bit lower).

The worse part is when they've all been trained in combat some, so their punches really hurt.

Ah, dwarf fortress. Where everyone literally beating each other's brains out is a 'logical outcome' because the AI has no brakes.
