Necro seige disappeared?
« on: July 24, 2016, 10:54:34 am »

On the first day of the second spring I got the message "The dead walk. Hide while you still can!" and zoomed to the edge and there were 2 corpse man and a cougar man. But as soon as I unpaused, they left immediately, and the !SEIGE! sign was also disappeared. What happened? Is it a troop just passing by? Or some bug?

Hello-goodbye sieges. Check legends mode; I'd guess they saw your fortress and were scared off by it's strength.

They're a new bug in 0.42.X->, but it's not known what causes them. At a guess, they're either introduced by the fix to sieger pathing (for them to find your fortress at all), or an older bug that was masked by the pathing bug.

I have seen sieges like this from both gobbos and necros. Only, the third time the dead came on by they actually invaded.

This bug is often triggered by thieves entering the map at the same time as a siege. You may want to be on the look-out for sneakers.

I don't think so. I have only two soldiers with bronze armor and bronze short swords, and 6 cage traps. If they were scared off by us, they can't conquer anything. They undead recruits have no brain?

So how to check legends mode?

Note the name of your fortress, save your game and make backup of it. Then retire the fortress and look up perhaps both recent history and your site in legends mode. Afterwards, restore to backup.

And genius zombies is kind of underexplored trope, I suppose.

I don't think darkflagrance's connecton is particularly strong. Both necro sieges and goblin sieges occasionally have sneakers with them (necros and snatchers, respectively) but I've had both a lot of hello/goodbye sieges without sneakers, as well as real sieges with sneakers, with no particular over representation of sneakers with the bugged variant.

This happened to me a while ago playing 42.x for three sieges in a row.  By then I was so bloodthirsty that I even had various animals positioned using chains to lead them from the side of the map into my fortress and even the lovely promise of dog flesh wasn't enough to lure the zombies in.

Hm, that makes me think: Kobold thieves are awfully scaredy-cat, fleeing when spotted - kinda like the above siege.

However, I've read kobolds send ambushes as they grow bolder from successful thievery.

What if you dropped the children of fort on goblin kidnappers, would that help with getting goblin sieges to stay long enough for dwarven diplomacy to greet them?
