Giant snails?
« on: July 14, 2016, 02:42:21 pm »

Can giant snails breed? I'm asking because the only wildlife on my 6x6 island embark is a pair of giant snails and I'd like to know if I can start a farm. Otherwise, I'll just kill and butcher them for their meat and shells.

Well, I checked the raws and they have a cluster token of 1:1 so I think that means that they're good to go.  But I'm not entirely sure.

The wiki is inconsistent, as it claims they are genderless (which causes them to be unable to breed), but at the same time tagged as breeding. The raw description on the wiki doesn't seem to have any gender info, which sounds like genderless to me. At least some snails IRL are hermaphrodites.
I'd recommend you to try and see what happens, but without holding your breath. If you do and get offspring, I'd like to see that info as feedback.

I would typically say no, but instead if they are completely world generated (like harpies), don't slaughter them all instantly, instead keep a handful and release some at a later date.

If they do miraculously breed (im not holding my breath). I would recommend allowing the offspring to re-join the natural population so it can regenerate faster, normally chain born wild creatures (via contact breeding methods without pet training) will make a beeline to the exit (usually leading into traps along the way) because a new wave of creatures entering the map triggers for them to leave.

[MALE] and [FEMALE] castes are required for creatures to breed in either fortress mode or as historical figures.

Does this mean hermaphroditic creatures cannot exist, as I'd assume they'd somehow need to be members of both mutually exclusive castes?

Yep, pretty much.
