A dozen levels of magma down, I see erratic puffs of something. Thinking the fortress was about to die, or a miner had jumped to his doom, I investigated

What I found was slightly less impressive

So it turns out rain doesn't care if you're submerged in 30' of lava, it'll still get you wet

Would it even be possible to cook magma crab? They spend most of their time submerged in lava, completely unharmed.

Dwarf cook in such way that they mince and mix the material and call it cooked.

you can't actually butcher magma crabs.  they might be made of nothing but rock and magma.

A small rock-eating creature that lives in molten rock.  It scurries on little feet and swims through liquid rock with sharp wings.  It uses magma to digest rock and spits out burning globs

It uses all the materials of normal crabs, except they don't melt or burn, so I guess cooking is fine, but none of the fat would render
... not that a crab has that much fat on it
