Honestly? I feel like presentation helped a lot. The plot is a bit out there, but at the same time, the fact that they did double down is why it was so effective. They managed to pack a lot awesome moments in the game.

I would say that on the whole, the quality of video game storytelling in FPSes has pretty harshly declined compared to when HL2 was released. It probably peaked somewhere around 2007-08, and really began to fall off the plateau around 2010-12. Despite a few breakout hits, the past several years have been pretty bad to video game stories. Sure, there are always a slew of indie games with great stories--but few companies really understand or have the balls to devote the time to creating those big, set-piece stories that capture a new generation of gamers. Even the ones that do are riddled by ridiculously poor management decisions or have always kind of struggled on the business side of things (Looking at you, Konami and Nintendo respectively).

Most FPS's even today live and die on multiplayer, so most of the dev time gets focused on that, and single player suffers.

Except Titanfall 2, which has both excellent singleplayer and multiplayer. ;)

This past two years actually has quite a number of good singleplayer FPS narratives.

DOOM, Titanfall 2, PREY, Wolfenstein 2, etc.

I also think Battlefield 1 had a fun singleplayer. A more controversial opinion would be to also say I enjoyed Infinite Warfare's singleplayer as well.
