I have been playing around with new starting methods and found my new favorite one. It is easiest to start from a pocket world and everything is more compact:
First I make pocket worlds until I find everyhing I want on the same tile as a goblin town
Next I outfit my dwarves for war. Instead of digging and moving stone and creating trade goods in year one, my year one is wanton destruction of Goblin kind.
My most successful so far was a group of 7 dwarves who were all marksdwarves, with a secondary skill in plant gathering (2 dwarves), fishing (2 dwarves), woodcutting (1), woodcrafting (1), furnace operations (1). On taking the huge multi level Goblin buildings I cleared resized most of the rooms and setup the basics, built a trade depot, and spent the next two year looking for ore, and slowly selling off the loot I couldn't use from the gobos.
The woodcrafter is essential I found as his skill allows him to make sufficiently powerful arrows to kill the tougher goblins and demons that were in the town. Most of the time he stayed behind and churned out mountains of arrows, because even fire doesn't burn through arrows faster than a skilled marksdwarf.
Essentially I spend the first month of so making the bows, and the arrows in a makeshift camp.... once the weapons are ready, the raid begins.
Try it out sometime! It's a lot of fun! Also, share your map seeds for others who may want to try this!
