It would be cool if a dwarf with Engraving could dig shelves (equivalent to bins) right in the rock, similar to a fortification. That way, you could make lots of stone furniture super quick, you wouldn't need to have masons dragging rocks from/to the workshop, they couldn't get toppled... probably other benefits too. Downsides: they wouldn't be portable, you couldn't build them in soil layers, and they would be only as valuable as the stone you dug them out of.

Alternative: shelves could be built on-site out of blocks by anyone, not just masons or carpenters.

Why limit it to shelves?  Any furniture should be able to be carved straight from the rock.  A throne carved out of a mountain would be very dwarfy.

There have also been suggestions before about carving floodgates in place, and furniture out of ice.

But then how will angry dwarves throw thrones around and kill your legendary weaponsmith?

I like that, but if there is one tile wall space between two bedrooms, from which should the carved furniture be available and to whom should it belong? If I am not mistaken, it is impossible to place two pieces of furniture in one tile.

If they have walls on their backs, it could be like engravings: Only visible/affecting from one side.

Otherwise, with no walls I'd think they would be accessible from both or even every side.

I think the idea is that the furniture is carved "in place" at the same time the room is dug out, not "into" the wall. That wouldn't work in a tile-based game.

"Recessed" beds in the wall which aren't passable from the other side would also wreck pathfinding, since it would create a class of tile that has different movement rates depending on which direction you were going. There's a reason tile-based games never do this. Right now, tiles are either impassable or passable, regardless of which direction you were going. A "recessed" bed in the wall would be passable if you were coming from the "room side", and "impassable" if you were coming from the "other side". And the open space on the other side would be passable normally, but impassable if you're in the wall/bed space. So the pathfinding couldn't quickly cull possible moves, it would have to do extra checking on the type of tile you're on, what direction your current tile is "facing", what type of tile you want to move to, and what way that tile is "facing". All those checks would be done once per every step a dwarf takes, and none of them exist right now.

So the concept here is that I could carve my monarch's throne from a native platinum cluster?  Combined with some form of quality control this would be absolutely amazing, I would happily have an engraver practice for a decade or more to ensure a masterpiece (or maybe artifact?), very cool idea, I would absolutely love this.
