Oh they're on the floor, not over a pit.  I get it.  neat.  Could be useful for dealing with other things...

This would be ridiculously more complicated but you could have an island of rock in a pit with draw bridges going out in all four direction.  So you pull a switch and the bridges go up and form a room and also opens a hatch up top and floods the new 'room'  then you simply lower the bridges to drain the water/corpses.

This is what I will be doing for several hours tonight.

...and therefor worth doing!

My bridge trap works. It crushes them completely. A single bridge would have been able to achieve the same result, but it looks cooler.

An average operator in masterpiece parts can shred 50% of the invaders before they  get within range of their own bows.
A dwarf maxed out with Companion managed to kill all 83 invaders with a single arrow.

I typically just use a traditional four walls, with towers, catapults on the bottom of each tower, moat surrounding drawbridge entrance invincible fortress.

I was feeling adventurous once and had a conveniently placed shallow magma vent. So I killed the few imps in the vent and built a series of retracting bridges each anchored on the sides over the vent 2 z levels up.

I never got to use it on a siege but it worked well on a few camels that my hunter scared into it.  Shame the bridges had a bit of a delay in raising because the hunter took a plunge too.

I build a 2 wide moat round my fort with a wall round the inside and a 3 wide brige leading out. once the goblins appear up goes the bridge and down come a few 1 wide bridges leading to a couple of side doors, then i station my marksdwarves on top of the wall round my moat and my infantry round the inside of the doors. Tatics like this make casualties unavoidable but traps make it too easy.

i have a 3-wide passage with 9 weapon traps (in a 3x3 square) filled with masterwork obsidian swords, and then 30 cage traps.
if a enemy doestn die while stepping on, at least, 3 weapon traps, he will be caged. also this gives me lots of limbs...

the caged goblins are freed in a 5x4 room with a bridge. they try to run to the door, and then the bridge launches them into a 15 story pit.

so every invader gets its limbs looped off.

I only use traps inside my fort, to catch thieves and snatchers.

It's quite easy to create a solid wall of traps which no goblin army can survive.  Unfortunately, it's also quite boring.  For my most recent games I've chosen to rely more heavily on raw dwarfpower for defense - mostly marksdwarves.

My current fort entrance looks something like this (not exactly to scale):

code:

...{the great outdoors}...
....ooo...................
   ooo
   ooo  <- bridge
....ooo....................
...........................
.......................ooo.
           bridge ->  ooo
                      ooo
........#####..........ooo.
........#####..............     # = guard tower
........#####..............
.{fortress entrance yard}..

An elevated guard tower, with fortifications on the top level, overlooks a land bridge which connects my fortress to the outside world via two retractable bridges.  Any invaders must cross the land bridge to access the fort.  My marksdwarves can fire at them from the fortified guard tower.  In the event of an emergency (e.g. all my marksdwarves decide to grab a snack during a siege) the bridges can be retracted, leaving the invading force trapped on the land bridge.  My marksdwarves then pick off at their leisure.

Hammerdwarves and axedwarves can be stationed just inside the 2nd bridge to pick off any stragglers - preferably behind a fortification of sort sort, so that they do not get shot by goblins on the land bridge.

The goblins in mine ran up and killed some useless dwarves and stayed by the bodies, so I got my army to run outside and slaughter the goblins recklessly. It was easy. And people say the only hard way to fight a siege is to fight it! Pah, it's easy either way. One way's just fun.
