Getting People Interested In Dwarf Fortress

Have any of you gotten your friends to start playing Dwarf Fortress? If so, how did you go about it? What were their initial thoughts etc.

I got my brother to play Dwarf Fortress once, he settled in a terrifying region and was gobbled up by zombie turkeys within moments of starting. We laughed.

Most of my friends love hearing the stories about what is going on in my games,but the moment I show them what a screen shot looks like they go cross eyed. It's a shame.
