Ey, double post because it needs its own post - if they had got Rowan Atkinson and Matt LeBlanc = No issues, Good Gear

If this was just maverick lol random, nah that'd just be boring as hell. What's so special about denigrating where people come from? You honestly think that's inexcusable where you could excuse punching a guy in the face depending on how the other bloke comported themself? The hell does that even mean ;D

I mean if the guy gave as good as he got and was calling him an "inbred English moron" and daring him to do something about it because he's the producer....that's a fight between two people. If the guy is literally there apologizing for 45 minutes over cold dinner while dude calls him names, calls his people lazy, then ends with a punch to the face....then yes, how someone comports themselves does matter to me. That's the kind of shit you see about guys beating their wives.

Who's bringing up saying what we're all thinking, he's not a politician he's just a guy who pisses people off on Tele m8, the stakes are so low there's no need for political phrases

I guess the stakes are "would you watch his show again if/when he's back" and I'd gotta say no. I could probably enjoy Top Gear with just Richard and James, albeit it a little less. But knowing he's that kind of bloke, nah, I wouldn't.

I get it, you don't like the politically correct sensitive stuff. It gets to me too. I still think it's kinda separate since technically, none of this happened on the air. Put another way, had he started calling out his cameraman in the middle of the show for being "a lazy Irish bastard" while swearing at him, before finally walking over there and punching him, would that make it different?

morality and entertainment

*shrug* When you do know something about a celebrity or media producer eventually, I think it's ok to form an opinion based on it, change my behavior because of it. If a game dev turns out to be a crook or say horrible shit or do some horrible shit, I'm ok not buying their games or playing them. I don't see why all of Hollywood and Entertainmentlandia is any different. It is simply my choice not to watch it, not like I'm out on the street boycotting the guy or something. Life is a series of moral revelations and decisions about to do about them, I don't see why entertainment is excluded. If I found out tomorrow that a 40k author I read regularly has been arrested 8 times for beating his wife, I'm gonna skip his books on the shelf next time I'm out. It's not like I would spend my time trawling the personal backgrounds of all the people who entertain me though. That's what the media is for.

Ah, I think I get it bit more now.

The way I reckon it, after the whole thing blew up there is no one they could've gotten to fill the gap. They tried a whole rebranding thing with diversity and a total lack of moistness to get a new demographic but there's no overlap there, so obviously it's gonna die. I'm sure Beeb were hopeful that the show could still live on, but I don't think they were exactly expectant of any results. If you look at the guests they try to get on, there was that thing with canceling and all because few really wanted to go on new gear... Perhaps there were other, better hosts who just didn't want to touch the poison potato of dead people walking.

I dunno, it certainly is a poison potato but I think it would be salvagable with the right hosts (not sure how many times you can do that before you can't come back from it.) They just need guys who enjoy what they're doing, are actual car guys, who don't need to be great in the set as long as they have fun on the scene.

Quote
I just love the symbolism of it all too, cheeky Evans promises not to follow the boots of naughty schoolboy Clarkson - but the stress and expectation of results, the controversies surrounding him offending people, the actual performance itself - in the end he walks the boots of Clarkson, only without a sense of humour. I'm not too caught up on this derail since it's clearly more fruitful a discussion than the original topic, which pretty much concluded after 3 posts.

Yeah, you have to be stressing out pretty hard to swear at your audience during your opening show. I find it hard to imagine the BBC writing off a show as internationally successful as Top Gear though. Maybe you're right, maybe the show is jinxed at this point, like the bad air can't really clear from anyone that comes near it :P

Quote
I'm honestly surprised the celebrities don't crack more than Humpty Dumpty in a wall factory, with all them eyes on them looking for drugs, fracas and lewdness. What worries me about Evans is that he's getting really nervous about maintaining nothing's wrong. I hope at least Joey from Friends makes it out alive lol, he actually added entertainment to the show. Only criticism you can really have on him is that it's clear he's "acting," you know - like he's a character and not just being himself, reading from a script, but that would be workable if they wanted to make the show seem more scripted and finished

A degree of drugs and lewdness I can accept, even approve of. Violence, consistent racism, things of that nature, not so much. Don't you worry about Joey I'm sure he'll land on his feet. He hasn't done Dancing With the Stars yet :P But yeah, with a lot of scripting and practice he'd probably be ok? But that's not what made the show fun. You tend to see an unfiltered version of people when they're driving. Which is why I always enjoyed the celebs driving budget cars segment, despite I guess people not liking it generally. Same story with the challenges and stuff, you got to see the unfiltered version of the hosts when they roll a car or wreck it or catch air or wipe out. That stuff is kinda anti-scripting and anti-playing a character.

Quote
Their hosts not driving is a bit much, I can pass off their lack of maintenance skills as it's not like they can't learn over time, but they needed to establish their scripted identity fast

Yeah, you have to have the chops to lead that show. I always liked Top Gear because it reminded me of my friends and our willingness to trash a car in the name of fun, do stuff that smart people generally don't do. You have to like cars and really love driving, maybe even driving recklessly and be willing to personally race. It won't deny it's pure machismo but it's what pulled me into the original show. If you're missing that, you can't really say it's Top Gear.

Quote
Cos we're being symbolic and all about Evans continuing the cycle of fracas, gonna be symbolic and all with the show - the Viper vs Vette, two fast cars racing with guns and missiles on top... Nothing fires, nothing happens. Why not just take off the guns and missiles if they're not doing anything and have the hosts and cars stand on their own feet? Producer's working hard in the wrong direction

My guess would be they're trying to find something their hosts are actually comfortable/capable of doing. But they did say Clarkson was a big part of shaping what the show was. Including the actual bits.

To me Joey will be forever type-casted. So I can't really give my thumbs up to that combo. But I'd definitely try to watch it for Rowan Atkinson. (You know unless he ate a baby and no one's found out about it yet, or something.)

Nah see, the producer is in charge of running the show in all daily management aspects and the producer failed to have any hot food on set.

Clarkson was sympathetic to all the blokes what ever wanted to lay a good one on their boss's face.

Ha, literally 30 seconds and then top it off with wife beating

Exactly, the stakes are that low they're less than nonexistent, being ah hypothetical of a nonexistant scenario

Last I checked, there were no politically correct people trying to make violence more accessible to children
They're only one part of the latter to boot
Also to answer the question, yes. I like cameramen more than producers

Yeah and I'm saying that's pretty retarded, so you're going to regulate your media consumption based off of the media images the media gives you
I see a problem here

Ah, I think I get it bit more now.
If funny=yes, +1 point

I dunno, it certainly is a poison potato but I think it would be salvagable with the right hosts (not sure how many times you can do that before you can't come back from it.) They just need guys who enjoy what they're doing, are actual car guys, who don't need to be great in the set as long as they have fun on the scene.
They can't just do that since it is a poison potato, least not at the start - you have to differentiate

Is Chris Evans a horrible person for verbally abusing the audience because he has no banter? Or is it the bad air?
Tbh I just think every show should be hosted by Jackie Chan, then none of this would happen

A degree of drugs and lewdness I can accept, even approve of.
Absolutely haram :D

Violence, consistent racism, things of that nature, not so much.
What's the difference between inequity and inequity

Don't you worry about Joey I'm sure he'll land on his feet. He hasn't done Dancing With the Stars yet :P But yeah, with a lot of scripting and practice he'd probably be ok? But that's not what made the show fun. You tend to see an unfiltered version of people when they're driving. Yeah it was what made things fun, but they can't follow old gear because by doing so, they invited comparisons with the old gear - which obviously wouldn't hold up short of a miracle. At that point the only option you have is to completely differentiate, take a new angle and go down that road full speed running

My guess would be they're trying to find something their hosts are actually comfortable/capable of doing. But they did say Clarkson was a big part of shaping what the show was. Including the actual bits.
Surely they would've already found what their hosts were comfy doing before they hired them?

To me Joey will be forever type-casted. So I can't really give my thumbs up to that combo. But I'd definitely try to watch it for Rowan Atkinson. (You know unless he ate a baby and no one's found out about it yet, or something.)

I watched it tonight. I think Evans is fine but Leblanc is fairly lame and they definitely don't have the chemistry that made the old show fun to watch. I will probably continue to watch it with my dad.

Weird, I found it the exact opposite. Evans sounds wrong (and way too desperate to be a cool host), while LeBlanc seems to have embraced the Top Gear presenter's tradition of being slightly baffled and confused at all times, and is tolerable, even if he's acting it.
