What replaces alt f4 in windows 10?
« on: June 25, 2016, 05:40:30 am »

I fell asleep before rescheduling the win10 update so my pc decided to install win10.

Now, I tried to kill a task using alt-f4, but that just brings up a menu.

Is there another shortcut key that replaces the alt f4 kill task?

TL, DR: ctrl alt del---> task manager ---> find the task

Longer
alt f4 has never been a kill task shortcut. It's a "close window" shortcut. Which might or might not work when trying to kill a task... in any windows system. It IS still the shortcut for closing windows, though.

If you want to kill a task, you have to load up the task manager by ctrl alt del'ing and clicking in the "task manager" button. Look for whichever task you want to kill, right-click on it, and select the relevant option from the menu.

aw apparently it no longer closes windows it did close before then :P

I know about the task manager, but thanks. I'll just have to miss my one button solution for some programs then I guess.

Or downgrade back to 7.. I'll give 10 a fair try out though, I think I have 29 days left to decide.

That link was helpful.

I guess it's my keyboard, which is one of those with a Fn key but no FnLock key. I already noticed that win10 swapped my settings. On win7, I had fiddled with some configuration settings somewhere, probably keyboard settings. F1-F12 worked as F1-F12, windows 10 swapped that back to the default Fn+F1-F12.

I'll see if I can swap that back, perhaps that'll take care of the alt-f4 issue as well.

TL, DR: ctrl alt del---> task manager ---> find the task
Ctrl+shift+escape takes you directly to task manager, btw.

It does?  Cool.  Didn't know that.
I keep Task Manager pinned to my taskbar to begin with, anyway.

You can also just right click on the taskbar and Task Manager is one of the options there

And in Windows 10, right-clicling on the start button brings up a whole host of useful options.

If you left click it instead, the start menu comes up

But yeah. Alt+F4 still works for me on Win10. Might be a feature of Classic Shell though.
