Legendary Hero Fort Challenge
« on: October 14, 2007, 09:23:00 am »

Here's an interesting challenge. It also makes a very fun fortress build:

Using the adjuststart.exe utility, start a fortress with 3 dwarves and 5000 points. (I change their professions to "Legend" at the beginning). Spend about 4500 solely on raising all their skills to Proficient, then spend the rest on supplies.

Use a desert, rocky wasteland, or glacier map, preferably some with links to other civs, but low wood. You won't really need it anyway (If you spend over 1000 points on food you'll get like 15 wagons + mules anyway).

Whenever you get immigrants, even your starting blacksmith, immediately kill them off. One of your first rooms should be a nice, big meeting room with a nice, big floodgate and a nice, big lever.

Whenever you get trade wagons coming, always slaughter them and steal their supplies.

No traps allowed.

How long do you think you can last? Remember, your 3 dwarves will all have stats in the zillions thanks to having all those proficient skills, so they will tear through rock like knives through butter, move 100x as fast as other units, and hack them to shreds instantly. However, even losing one (ie. in a flood, to an archer, to a tantrum) is a crippling blow. On the plus side, it's hilarious to see them engrave or mine a square in less than half a second and your frame rate is just insane.

People have done hermit challenges, where they start with 1 dwarf, normal points, no skills and kill all immigrants/traders and survived and this will only be easier. See the story about urist (thread title is one dwarf against the world IIRC) for an example. I'd bet you could just load a ton of war dogs into a cage to kill the demons and too deep without much trouble.

The worst part would be digging out the magma with no sacrificial peasant. Legendaries have a decent chance of not triggering the flood, but it still happens. I guess fire imps could get lucky shots in and kill your guys, but a dozen war dogs assigned to each should make that very unlikely.

with only 3 dwarves, you won't get the mayor which means no matter how many times you drown the humans they won't siege you. No goblin sieges either. that makes it too easy. you also don't get moods with less then 20 dwarves and it should be simple to keep 3 guys from tantruming (legendary bedrooms and dining halls for everyone!)

Load up a game of DF and before you start fortress mode, go to start->run and type cmd to get a dosprompt. Then, go to your dwarf fort folder with cd (ie. cd c:\games\dwarffort\), and if your adjuststart.exe is there (it should be) type 'adjuststart x y' where x and y are the dwarves and points you want. Then type exit and alt-tab back to your DF game and start a new fort. Voila!

One thing you could do is let a few dwarves stay outside until you get the mayor and other nobles so you can get sieges. Otherwise this'll be way too easy.

here's a way to make this a challenge: No wide hallways, no rooms, no turns. Buildings outdoors, except those with location requirements (mill, magma items)

All corridors must start from outside, cannot turn (and thus must bridge across the features again and again, and the hallways can only be 1 square wide. This essentially means half or more of any given mineral remains unused, and to get from a to b you will likely have to go out and in again. it probably also means Nile farming only. The vast majority of the dwarves time would be consumed getting around.

A second thought on this note leads me to the following challenge: one dwarf, no skills, desert (terrifying or haunted?), 130 points, too deep as fast as possible, and compare successful too deep dates.

How long does it take demons to come out once you first breach the pits?  I'm wondering if you could have success with a "run like freaking heck" strategy.  Kind of like playing Dig Dug: Once you hit the demons, just keep going, and mine along the adamantium for a long time.

Or, for that matter:  Once you're past the pits, build a drawbridge on the other side and raise it for protection.  You could hustle one (or three) dwarves into your little "back room" there.  If one of your dwarves brings a bucket past the demons, one of them brings an anvil, one of them brings a charcoal bar, and all of them have lots of animals, you might not ever need to go back!  Re-cross the magma river from the wrong side!

Now I want to try and Too Deep with a few full sets of adamantium gear, without ever having seen a demon after breaching the pits.  This could work out.

not very long at all. If you stop the miner from digging the instant he opens a pit sometimes he can make it out before he gets ambushed, but only sometimes. There is no way you will dig more then 1 or 2 squares even with a legendary perfectly agile miner before the demons pop out.

I've also heard demons smash raised drawbridges, I've never seen it myself and I had thought they were completely invulnerable but more then 1 person has said they saw one get smashed so I'm not sure.

you could hit the adamantine without ever digging out a pit, but due to the way they are arranged doing it without reveal.exe is nearly impossible.

That actually sounds like fun, something to do while waiting for the new version at least.

That's impossible. Not without cheating, anyway,. There is no way in hell you could fight the demons with a single, unskilled dwarf, and only years of immigration bring enough dwarves to defeat the demons. Perhaps you could use granite.exe to find a path between the pits.

With some dogs to decoy and quick work with a smashy bridge of death, I could see it as doable.

EDIT: Have to learn to spell   :)
