Ice sculpture
« on: April 07, 2008, 12:53:00 pm »

I recently started a new fort because my old one was inefficiently designed. My new location has bloody cold winters where any unattended water will freeze instantly. This was pointed out in a very interesting fashion.

In my old fort I had a habit of toppling free-standing mesas by digging out the lowest level, channeling a pit under the remaining top, supported by a constructed floor and a support, then pulling the Demo-Lever(tm), causing the enormous lump of rock to fall neatly into the pit amidst a cloud of dust. And since the mesas were usually formed by a brook cutting through a cliffside, there was often a majestic fountain of water reaching  one or two z-levels into the air, then falling back down, turning a large area of land into a temporary swamp. This time the lever was pulled in mid-winter in a rather chilly climate.

The fountain of water froze in mid-air. I'd post a few shots if I was patient enough to upload the pics. Nevertheless, it's quite an interesting sight. I wonder if I should go carve it into amusing shapes before the winter ends.

Next winter I'm trying the same thing on the nearby mesa, which is about 4-5 times larger than the one I just toppled.

This sounds interesting enough to warrant pics.

Please?

Okay, got some pics up.

First is a shot of the now-filled pit by a frozen brook.

Next is the ground-level site which in normal circumstances should now be covered in water.

Instead it froze into an interesting structure before it managed to cascade down.

Water has an interesting way of splashing very high up when it is entirely displaced by a falling lump of sand and rock.

Any suggestions what I should do with it?

[Edit]

Here is the same site in Spring after the structure melted, with the next, larger peak being undermined. I'm thinking of constructing a small building inside the ice statue, perhaps for a workshop, making ice crafts to sell to elves or something else.

Set up a mason's shop right next to it and make ice crafts

Hmm, that would be a nice way to cheat elves out of their money. I'll try that next winter, although I could just dig into the brook to get ice. I've got minor excavation going under the brook anyway, since the brook's bed contains both coal and ornamental stones. Maybe I could carve a workshop INTO the next such, if I can manage to repeat it. This time it should be larger.

Sadly, you can't craft anything out of water. To much possibility of abuse for purposes of training, maybe.

You can, however, build the entire first floor of your above-ground castle from it--then laugh gleefully as the rest collapses with the spring thaw.

Very cool, BTW. I may have to try that with an aquifer in my permanently frozen haunted taiga...
