More libraries
« on: June 15, 2016, 02:18:02 pm »

A simple suggestion really - there are very few libraries in the world right now meaning that there is hardly any scholar life or opportunities for a writer. I believe that fortresses, towns and perhaps forest retreats should have libraries of varying size depending on the population, and the number of scholars, which in turn should be determined by population of the site and civs attitude towards knowledge.

Libraries are already determined by their civs attitudes to knowledge. But it's an all or nothing approach right now. That's probably one reason why there's so few. If one human civ doesn't value knowledge that's a couple of hundred less towns to build a library in.

To make being scholar actually important we need more libraries - those I believe should be established In every civ - each of them needs doctors and engineers, regardless of their attitude to knowledge, except for the most primitive ones - I cannot imagine goblins or kobolds reading or writing a book really, they seem more occupied with other, more nasty tasks. The attitude towards knowledge can determine their size, and the amount of scholars and scribes.

Not a good enough reason imho, I don't think adding it just so x play style is valid is the way to go in DF which imho is a simulation first and foremost.

This however is a very good point, how can the civilization not be a bunch of wandering tribals if they don't value knowledge enough to keep the knowledge of agriculture alive? how can they have metal working if they not willing to preserve the knowledge of it? just doesn't make sense.
