Looking for suggestions for next time
« on: October 08, 2007, 12:50:00 pm »

Well, I feel I've done well with my current map compared to how I've done before, this being my fourth map, but I'm still having some problems.  Does anyone see glaring errors with my fortress as it is, beside the fact I have no military?  (I say besides since I'm building the military now)

Well, the only thing I would of done differently is build the fortress further in since you have little area for siege defenses. However, you have that lava moat, so, I guess it doesn't matter that much.

Your magma forge is really far away from your fortress, which would cause problems with weapon productions and such. I would also advise having about two magma forges and smelters and a few more then two furnace operators and metalsmiths to operate them. If you want to alleviate the problem of your metalsmiths running there and only being lightly productive you should build them each a room, with a table and chair(so they can eat around there) Put two kegs of booze in each room and two cooked meals(so they don't leave seeds for more people to have to go there). That way they will sleep, eat, and drink near the magma and get more crafting done.

One thing that is blaring out at me is that your farm does not seem to be perma-flood protected or maybe it is. Anyways, to keep that farm from being flooded out in any circumstances you can put a channel in front or behind the door, that will stop any flood waters from escaping that room.

That's not a problem for me, since I lock the doors then issue a pull level command, and vice-versa for unlocking.  Because of the design and my checklist, I don't believe a perma-flood is possible.

It would be rather difficult like that, depends on if you ever get really unlucky and a critter goes up in there and destroys the door. I think that can happen IIRC.

personally, I build very little to the west of the cave river.  I leave that for siege defenses, tree farm, and trade depot.  everything else goes east of the cave river, since in a mature fortress, very little to nothing should be going on outside, which means less distance for your dorfs to walk.

Not bad at all! Other than what them folks said, I have one little tip: dwarves tend to complain if they have to share a table with eachother, so arrange your tables like cttc instead of one table between two chairs.

That tileset looks really good, especially the river and magma. I usually stick with the default but I may have to switch after seeing that.

Thanks for the tips, I'll take them into consideration while I'm working on the next fort.  There is one big thing I need to do, above all else...  lower the population cap.  100 dwarves gives me way too much lag @_@.

The tileset is curses, by the way  :)  Also I've posted the most recent version of that fortress on the DFMA.

I'm personally an advocate for reducing micromanaging and using fortifications in river/farmplot walls rather than floodgates, levers and channels. It keeps farmplots irrigated all year around in green times, farmers safe from river attacks and they can keep working during the seasonal flood. No need to evacuate them and pull the leaver every new season.

I've seen few maps doing this. Have I missed something?

As your lava moat is set up now it will take a bit to get to the entrance. Probably not so slow that an invading goblin army could get into the fort but I would have flooded the channel up to the outside and had a floodgate open on the outside so the moat fills up quicker.  Also that way its easy to time the lava so that it burns goblins to death   :)

Though I don't suppose there much you can do about it now.
