The Missing Metal
« on: October 08, 2007, 11:33:00 am »

So, I've settled quite the happy little fortress.  The wildlife consists of deer, foxes, raccoons, and wolves, so my trappers (for the most part) are happy trappers and I've had to build a second butchery to keep up with supply. I've been able to suspend food-crop planting for the past year (I'm heading into winter of Year 3) to concentrate on brew-crops, and the food supply hasn't dropped noticably.  I've gone past the chasm, found a truly huge supply of gold, lots of gems, and even some platinum was uncovered recently.

What I haven't found even a scrap of... is iron.

I've been digging at random north and south of my main hallway, but still *nothing*.  I'm sure it must be there, but I just can't find it.  At this point I'm considering mass-producing coins to get the Bookkeeper, then melting down all of my iron items in the hopes of finally getting enough raw metal to make some steel.

Has anyone ever encountered this?

It's just unlucky random placement. Mine all the way north and all the way south, you'll find some eventually.

Also, random giffing is not the best way to go. Either go straight up the center north and south, or follow along the magma and chasm. You might need to do both. Worst case scenario is to have to do both.

Or, you could simply download reveal.exe and then crash yourself out. I prefer to use a little .bat that I call dwarfkill. I've yet to have an inflate issue after using it, but your mileage may vary. Create a text file named dwarfkill.bat and the file will contain the line

code:
 taskkill /f /im dwarfort.exe

this will close the program so fast you'll wonder if it was ever running

Killing the dwarfort.exe task will leave your save files in an inconsistent state, which will cause all sorts of weird behavior after you start it up again.

If you're going to do that, make a backup before you start Dwarf Fortress, and then restore it after you kill the task.

Heh.  Crazy Windows NT features for the win:

taskkill /f /im *

I did finally find some through regular digging, a small patch of it waaaaaaay to the north, and a bigger vein waaaaaaaay to the south.  Too late to save two of my metalsmiths from their strange moodage, and it looks like I'll be dealing with very limited supply.  I'll probably have to rely on bronze where I can.

Doing this won't allow you to make steel.  You need iron in both block and ore form.

...really?  *rechecks Steel production process* Huh.  You're right.  Needs hematite ore for the pig iron-to-steel conversion.  Well, good thing I found some, then.

iron is a total non issue once the goblins start sieging you, you will have enough to build all the furniture bins barrels and whatever else you want out of iron and have some left over. I usually burn all my bronze making bucklers then melting them to train up an armorsmith.

hematite for steel production is an issue, but with legendary miners only mining you can find enough to equip your military and that's all you really need. it takes 10 steel per dwarf (3 for plate mail, 2 for greaves, 1 each for gloves boots and helm 1 for weapon 1 for shield) so 5 hemetite, you should be able to equip them no problem even if you don't find tons of it.
