I always rebind those stupid umhk bindings to wsad, it makes playing DF much more pleasant. Don't forget to swap "s" and "x" in the building orientation bindings! (it's like Toady has never played any games before, and is totally ignorant of the conventions)

It's like milo has never played Rogue, Angband, or Nethack and is totally ignorant of the conventions :P

I hate when people criticize the DF UI, the UI is so intuitive and functional when you get a hold of it...

and for me the "graphics" is amazingly beautiful, the choice of the ASCII curses to represent everything is just genius, the colors , the movement and behaviour of the creatures is just super well tought, the leaves falling, the flow of the river , for me the graphics its one of the most beautiful ever in the history of gaming, just how every PSX game and the first generation of 3d games just looks horrible and was one day in the past considered great!, DF is ascetic perfection giving a total representation and control of everything in the game in a very eye pleasing and functional way...

"Functional" is the only word I would use to describe DF's UI lol, and even that is only technically.

It took me two fortresses of running out of logs to realize that, yes, having endless work orders will make the work order keep going until supplies run out, even if the condition is no longer fulfilled. I thought the work orders would stop production if the conditions were to fail, but that doesn't happen, and there's no indication of that. This is just from the latest version.

What do you do when it requires both? Constructions and roads are moved with wsad, resized with umhk.

Use WSAD of course :) Move with lowercase, resize with uppercase. Works great.

Last time I played Nethack it used the numberpad or arrow keys...

NetHack can use the numberpad, but the traditional controls are hjklyubn (based on vi controls).

Oh, right. I forgot about that. I did that way back when and forgot it in my more recent bindings. I also use Shift +/- and Shift Arrows for menus.

The current state of DF is also very, very forgiving compared to how it use to be. For instance the chances of a total fort meltdown because one dwarf have a old pair of shoes on are very minimal today. They are a lot more robust that they used to be, giving far less tantrums and violence.

Also the UI is horrible, the graphic is kind of non existent and 3rd part software like DFhack/therapist etc. are absolutely needed to play.

DF has definitely gotten easier.  A lot of the complexity was getting industries set up so dorfs had their needs met and wouldn't tantrum, for one thing.  And having to learn tantrum prediction and mitigation was a whole skillset that's basically not needed now.

Totally agree on the UI and need for 3rd party programs too.  Start DF isn't hard anymore, but there's still a ton to learn and keep in mind to make a successful fort.
