I found a double waterfall embark
« on: June 09, 2016, 01:56:18 am »

Hello Everyone,

I was looking for cool waterfall embarks and found this;

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The waterfall to the left is really small but since it comes off of a minor river I figure I can redirect the river to fall into the lowest basin and basically create a 10 tile wide waterfall to build my fort around. The lower waterfall falls down by 12z.

I have never seen this type of formation before. Has anyone else seen this?

Are there any weird water pressure quirks I need to watch out for? I surmise that if I redirect the top river to fall into the lowest basin that it will simply drain off the map with the stream but for all I know the water will fill up the lowest basin.

Pressure: Waterfalls act as dammed rivers when it comes to pressure, i.e. water falling off them will fill up to the river level if not directed off the map edge. But I imagine as long as the lower basin leads the water off the map you'll have no problems.

Things to watch out for:
  • water pressure (damned dammed rivers, as mentioned)
  • dorfs trying to cross the slightly less deep water & getting swept down into the waterfall
  • FPS...
…and keas. Always the keas. And Kea Men (even worse, being "sentient" beings, corpseses freak out the dorfs)

Care to share the seed / embark save? It looks incredibly cool. Have !!fun!! with it! Post the resulting "island" (if I understood your plan correctly).

I don't care. I have discovered that if you spawn elves this way, cats will chase them down and eat them.

In my experience if you remove the erosion in advanced world generation parameters then waterfalls are much more common. Thats "Periodically Erode Extreme Cliffs" and "Erosion Cycle Count" both to 0 I think, did the settings a month back or so. I get a double waterfall or more pretty often in each large world. You will have much sharper mountains, but thats something I personally enjoy in my fantasy settings.

Still have to manually search for them though...

DF environments are so beautiful.

I wonder if you can build a secret passage that goes just behind the waterfall, allowing the water to fall down like an open window in front of a big hall. And I wonder if that location would give them happy thoughts. Imagining what it would look like is making me have happy thoughts right now :D

Yeah, falling water creates mist, which is highly efficient happiness generator. Dwarves like flooding their mountainhomes.

I wonder how many tries it would take for a kea to fly in without being pushed back by waterfall? Though, might be blockable by building statues/jewelers'/leatherworker's workshop on that edge that would allow arrow fire. Not to mention that flying/climbing building destroyers are woefully underexplored area of dwarven science.

This makes me want to make a huge dam that can be used as a flood the world device.
Bonus points for reusability, a self-destruct system for if shit really hits the fan, and choices of pressure.

Maybe a pump stack for recovering the water, too. Or just a big drain down into the caverns.

Double waterfalls you say?

This one has a 10~ z drop in the northeast waterfall, and then I think the southeast one is only 1 z or so.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

This one was 8 or 9 on the southern fall and just 1 or so z on the eastern one.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

This big snaky bastard was just a couple on the upper fall and then 4 or 5 on the lower I think?
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I forget if there was a second one nearby, but I'd say a 18 tile wide waterfall counts as two, shame it's only a z-level drop though.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Lastly this thing is the most amazing waterfall pair I've seen yet.

That's 26 or 27 z from the very top, the northern fall is that high, the southern one is "only" 14 or 15 I think? Maybe just 10 but still damn high.

Those were made by the same perfect world setup as I have here, though you may want to add the magma layer 2 back to get a hell layer, I removed it to experiment with the volcano weirdness noted in the 42.06 worldgen cookbook.

Those sites seem to be most prevalent in the western stripe of rivers and evil which those settings produce, I found a few in other areas but I did a big swath of north/south oriented high drainage areas to chop up the rivers and this happened.
