Do wild animals reproduce?
« on: December 17, 2007, 08:00:00 pm »

I want to create a giant spider silk farm, but I'm wondering if I could create a massive brood of them, which would be next to impossible by just catching them all. Anyways, just curious, thx.

Im not sure, with all the animals migrating all the time, it's hard to say if they do or not.

Yes, they do, but they're usually not on the map long enough.

So if I were to keep a contained group of giant cave spiders in an enclosed space, then they would grow? Oh, and I'm assuming they don't need to eat?

As long as you have a male and a female yes.  However, I believe that there is currently a bug where animals in cages don't breed.

No problem there, I intend to let them roam semi-free in a large room.

They do.  In one of the maps I've been playing, a female rhesus macaque fell into a dry lake.  I had captured some male macaques and every now and then I'll get an announcement about the trapped female giving birth.

Forgot to answer that part of your question.  Animals in cages need the "animal care" skill to stay alive, but otherwise I think they fend for themselves.  At least, I've never had a problem with animals starving to death and I just enable that skill on a couple of dwarfs.

i keep animals in cages just fine with nobody with that skill. i tend to capture quite a few animals and just leave em in the stockpile for a year or 2 before i ever get or train up an animal trainer

I've had a cow and a bull, both caged, have calves. Caged animals breed, even if they're both in a cage.

Now, will kobolds breed? Because that could get annoying. I'm not talking about thieves; I mean a kobold cave.

And does that mean I should expect those batmen, ratmen, at troglodytes to breed from my chasm? Because those stick around a while, right?
