From reading though the pages, a recurrent point made in the analysis section of threetoes stories is telepathy or wordless communication.

Though it is never clarified from the DF page stories on HOW magic is applied to constitute telepathy If it can be assumed that sentient creatures with a greater bond to a sphere (using elves and the 'natural world' as basis) have some access to the powers, no matter how potent or untamed it may be. Druids are mentioned as practitioners as their art, being the religious "wizards" responsible for consulting the assigned sphere itself and manipulating it.

Take for instance a typical dwarf, on its own, driven by drink has no great mind reading skills (unless it is born or inherits a odd trait by un-natural means aka 'The Sight' etc. via the gods or interactions with supernatural entities *also present in another threetoe story) besides a nose for digging direction via some kind of ~~ghostly overseer~~ that draws them into making inexplicable and improbable decisions leading to FUN.

However a well trained or naturally magicial dwarf (no midichlorians in my ale please) may be able to apply their sphere within the context of magic; like for instance a necromancer builds a sphere around itself to manipulate magic with, with the tower being somewhat a symbolic channeling point and marker of significance

Throwing out a few potentially dwarf relevant sphere interactions on this front on the topic of interpretation and communication.

  • Fire - Reading the candlelight or a flame for guidance, interpretation (inherent in dragons naturally, imagine a dragon magically drawing the heat and extinguishing candles all through a fortress in which to fuel its fire or convey a omen) and the slow movement of magma
  • Wealth/Gems - Artifacts with variables akin to miraculous crying statues or poltergiest like movement (divination rods etc), crystal balls for clairvoyance
  • Fortresses - Shifting auras of a fortress, sudden chills as dark entities pass through, mass hauntings or disturbance of the dead. (if appropriate)
  • Metals - Manipulation of metals to interpret which can be as simple as throwing a buttered bar of steel in the air and seeing which side it lands on

Draws me onto the next point.

Providing you can connect minds with a utterance creature that can actually understand your dialect to start with, a two way conversation with it is probably not going to go smoothly. This for most purposes would probably be better carried out via interrogation within a cage, negotiating the terms of release as well as any diplomatic 'suggestions'

A kobold caught in a cage cannot stem its nature to steal but if it so arranged, it can probably be bent and manipulated to own means as to pay tribute to them to ward them off or direct them at targets of interest for a very regretfully agreed on their part 10% of the goods for funding the excursion if they succeed. (On the other hand you might get fobbed off entirely when the deal falls through or the kobolds fail inevitably seeing no returns)

Im open to people carrying on and leading the discussion but also to leave any feedback or criticism of the post. Thanks.
This kind of manipulation extends outwards to other entities such as forgotten beasts onwards (given forgotten beasts are their own set of spheres and intelligent creatures, as such like dragons.
