Can you win a war in fortress mode?
« on: June 06, 2016, 05:42:21 pm »

I lost a fort to goblins.

I looked up what I was fighting in legends mode and basically a new war started between a goblin group and my fortress.

Year 1 - 6 goblins
Year 2 - 12 goblins, 2 trolls
Year 3 - scores of goblins and bleak dogs
Year 4 - over 200 enemies with 20+ of them trolls

They destroyed me. I opted for that instead of turtling, which I could of given my setup. It was already chugging at 8 fps.

My main reason for posting though is can you win a war in fortress mode, or would have this yearly siege gone on indefinitely? What determines if you win? I cannot (obviously) travel out and destroy their base of operations.

Thanks.

Since peace treaties are still only worldgen (as far as I know?) for now there's no way to 'win' the war. Wiping out the entire attacking civ could be classed as a 'win' (until the war crimes tribunal at least). But for that you'd need to use both fortress and adventurer to guarantee they're all gone.

Last time I retired my fortress it was attacked by over a thousand goblins (dorfs won with the help of a massive human merc meatshield apparently).

My strategy is to intercept them as they're moving onto the map. Once you take out the first handful, you'll be picking them off one by one as they arrive. Haven't had a single casualty since my 4 squads hit legendary.

A long corridor with traps. Start out with spiked iron balls 10x on first two rows. Then iron serrated discs. Early on cages are easy and a sure way to stop several goblins. A tip is that the miners are usually extremely deadly with the picks in a pinch.

You can "win" temporarily by crushing each attacking wave until the site sending the attackers is too depleted of population to send more. After 70 or so years they may send a couple of paltry waves of raw recruits until they again are too depleted to send any more.
Civs currently do not know how to draft attackers from sites other than the one the siegers come from, and they don't know how to shift the attacking site once it has been selected (to the point that a goblin civ can send attacks from a site that's shifted to the control of another goblin civ, as well as send attacks from that same site, now outside of civ control, even after the sending civ has failed).

Worth noting that setting up forward base-camps in adventurer mode is a pretty good way of taking out a sieging civ if you can handle the regular ambushes from patrols well enough.

I was having fun by building a bunch of pillars hanging over a flat volcano right up against a dark pit and just from messing around in the area a bit I've already lured 3 patrol groups over by traveling around while they are near, then heading to my ambush spot on foot before composing a poem to trigger the ambush.

Seems like it would be counter productive, but they load up as close to a square about 15 tiles from you as they can.

You can use that to control what tiles they can appear on and make them spawn on the pillars then beat em up/knock em into the magma down below.

You could do similar methods used from fort mode, as long as there is line-of site they'll load up there.

You could use it to make them spawn on the walls around a maze, say, and then jump down and fight them inside on your terms, if you wanted.

Totally, and it's hilarious.
