An unofficial conclusion I have reached is that goblins do better the smaller and older a world is.

I think it's because they're good at war and don't die of old age.

One other way you can emulate the way goblins sort of work with a modded in civilization is by making them have humongous litters of children and long lives.

I did that for a race of orcs I modded in.

could I just open the goblin civ raw and change them so they still die due to old age like other races?

Open "creature_standard.txt", search [CREATURE:GOBLIN] and add [MAXAGE:x:y] (somewhere after [EVIL], for example), where x and y are min and max death-from-old-age thresholds respectively.

what would be good values for that? i haven't looked into those values for the other races, so i've got no clue on how old a dorf would get if they led a "boring life".

Humans, being the "average race", have [MAXAGE:60:120]. Dwarves and kobolds have [MAXAGE:150:170]. Value of [MAXAGE:30:60] works fine on my custom race. So it's really up to you.
