Heroin
« on: April 24, 2016, 05:31:03 pm »

So, a few days ago I learned that this guy I used to hang out with in high-school OD'd on heroin. This isn't about dealing with it or anything, I've more or less managed that on my own, talking to other friends and what not. It's just that I don't really have any experience or knowledge with hard drugs like heroin, and I wanted to talk to anyone on here who does. What is it like to OD on heroin? Did he feel any pain when he died? I just feel like if i had a better understanding of the situation it could help me wrap my head around the whole thing. Sorry for the kind-of morbid post, but it feels inappropriate to be asking friends who are dealing with the same thing right now.

Probably not. Overdoses of opiates tend to abolish the breathing reflex. So basically they end up dying of lack of oxygen but they don't really feel like they are choking.

In fact, heroin addicts are notorious for becoming hostile when administered opiate antagonists during an overdose.

Not sure if this will help, but this documentary was pretty informative, at least to me.

From my personal experience with fentanyl, a opiate anesthesic, during surgery...

Probably an intense sensation of euphoria alongside relaxation and immediate conscience loss. A pretty painless death, fortunately.

I really want that one as a "when". I want "grubs", and "virgin woman" to turn into a dragon. and monkey children to suddenly sprout wings. And I want the Dwarven Mutant Academy to only gain their powers upon reaching puberty. I also have a whole host of odd creatures that only make sense if I divide them into children and adults.

Also, tadpoles.

Even at the best of times heroin makes the users fall asleep. Heroin works by being a surrogate for endorphin, which is the bodies natural pain dampener. All the person's pain receptors would have been suppressed at the time, they almost certainly just floated off to unconscious-land then stopped breathing. Heroin is just that good at suppressing brain functions: the bit that tells you to keep breathing falls asleep, too.

He died a painless death while he was high, likely unaware that he would never wake up again.

Hope things go well for him, his family and friends.

I took heroin a couple of times a few years ago and a close mate of mine had a near fatal OD (had to be administered Narcan).

Your friend died painlessly while almost certainly in a state of pure bliss.  Heroin temporarily washes away any feelings of doubt, sadness, anger etc and leaves the user completely relaxed, in a state of awe and  feeling as though they're enveloped in warmth.  You get lovely tingly waves of pleasure racing throughout your body.  It's kind of hard to describe but I'd liken the feeling to a combination of an orgasm and getting into a warm bath after being out in the snow for hours.  If I ever chose to commit suicide, it would be through heroin overdose.  There's a reason morphine is commonly given to patients in intense pain, and to ease the passing of the dying.

Disclaimer: This isn't meant to be advertisment or anything.  There's definitely a price to be paid for these experiences and unfortunately some pay more than others.
