How do I open floor hatches from the outside?

I've discovered a site but the entrance is a floor hatch. I've tried approaching from every angle, I tried < and >, but I can't enter. Am I doing something wrong? It's adjacent to a ramp. The floor hatch is on the same tile as a downward slope. Here's a little picture:

h = higher ground, l = lower ground, H = hatch, ^ are up ramps.

Can you not acces it from the side, from the lower ground?

I don't have much experience with adventure mode, but I think you can destroy doors and the like with your weapon.

If not, try entering from other z-levels.

Alt-Move. I think Ctrl-Move* works, too.

*Diagonal down. Yes, it's a thing. Greatly simplifies climbing.

The numpad works for movement, and (I think) if you stand over it and hit ALT+NUM5 you can move straight down.

I may be completely wrong it has been some time.
