I'd really enjoys 1600's TW with the clusterfuck that was the 30 years war. A lot happening in the same time frame, with the civil war in England and whatnot. Though the units would be quite boring; focus on the 30 year clusterfuck would require many German factions with somewhat identical units. I suppose Austria, Sweden, Poland, England, France and Spain would shine though.

Anyone still play this on occasion? Recently reinstalled to try out the Terminus mod

Any other good mods to try? I tried Radious but that makes the game too arcadey. I liked DEI for Rome 2 a lot more, much slower paced battles. But, I don't think there is a developed DEI-like mod for Attila yet. I do use Radious though just cause a huge unit selection, since vanilla has terrible unit variety which made me stop playing.

You can't spell necromancer without romance! *humps the thread back alive*

So this bad boy got 1.3 gb patch yesterday, as the new DLC was released. It actually changes stuff regarding migrations, hordes and religion. I started playing the new arab faction immediately and it is interesting, wedged between the Byzantines and the Persians. I became Nestorian but remained loyal to the Sassanids, fought war in their behalf and conquered Palestine. Unfortunately the gulf arabs turned hostile for some reason, I have only one army and now get pressed from two sides. I allowed Palestine slip to rebels and I'm kind of fucked because can't split my forces and so forth. Things are going to get interesting.

So, this is on a steep sale on Steam (75% off). Worth it for $12? I've barely bothered with Shogun 2 or Rome 2, so I'm not sure how much I'll get out of this.

I've been watching a few mods that are being developed for Attila. The two big ones are "[urll=http://www.moddb.com/mods/total-war-rise-of-mordorTotal War: Rise of Morder[/url]" and "Medieval Kingdoms: Total War". Though, neither is out so far so it's more something I've been keeping in mind for the future.

I think the general feel towards Attila has been better than Rome II but the DLC involving small changes like Viking Forefathers has irritated it's share of fans. Looking at the DLC a lot of it seems rather unnecessary.

I found a strategy I believe works with western roman empire. I bring all my forces to italy, and first turn, I desolate my entire empire (except italy, a bit of the north part of italy and syracuse since its a big part of that area.). That included all my african and iberian cities as well. No more city of Carthage :P I got I believe 60k or 70k money 2nd turn, and it prevented me going from war with everyone. In fact, a few turns later (5 turns into the game), one barbarian nation asked for peace, and a turn before that, I was able to get a truce with another barbarian nation who was coming into italy. Then he turned and left.

Did have to deal with initial rebels, but that wasn't too bad. My first attempt at this strategy, I wasn't ready for rebels at all. So this time, I hired generals around italy and recruited right away. My people hated desolation, but the hate only lasts one turn...so doesn't really matter too much lol. Plus, had a big problem with food, but I solved it really quickly.

Some turns in now though, its MUCH easier to manage than having cities all over the place. A lot easier, and I can build up and then re-build the empire.

My leader died in my last game as western romans in battle (big mistake on my part), and I was stuck with a barbarian leader since he starts off as heir to the empire. I considered that game over. Didn't want to play as a barbarian. Granted, I could have waited for the true roman's sons children to grow and try to assassinate the barbarian family line, but was too disappointed to keep playing.

So, doing eastern romans and its pretty hard. A LOT harder than western romans. My first game, Sassanids pwned me. Second game, Sassanids pwned me. Third game, Sassanids pwned me. Fourth game I bribed Sassanids, but then everyone else pwned me. And western rome declared war on me, so I just gave up at that point lol. Western rome didn't like me for some reason in that game. Dunno why people say western rome is hard, it IS if you don't burn everything to the ground. But the way I played western rome and consolidated in italy (burned everything else, including africa) made it a lot easier to play. Granted, I could do that as eastern romans, but it doesn't feel right and I have a ton of rich provinces that I'd really suffer.

Finally, fifth game I got my eastern roman leader a marriage with a Sassanids princess who is also fertile (20% increase chance of children) and bribed them like heck. Now I have a defensive alliance with them as well. Before the alliance, Attila declared war on me (wish I was able to get the alliance sooner). But, I've gotten a TON of my allies, including western romans to declare war on Attila. Attila is at war with a ton of people and has even been pushed back by the sheer might of defensive forces. I'll probably get sassanids to declare war on Attila, once I go back on. They like me a lot :P just gotta give them money probably. Money buys anyone :P

I have declared war on a couple Sassanid enemies too, which raises relations a lot. So that probably helped a lot in getting an alliance from them.

I also destroyed all the churches, and replacing it with roman pagan stuff. One reason I haven't expanded really, is cause I want all my provinces to be roman pagan.

Mostly I've let my allies do the work. Plus I made a few vassal states, otherwise I've been building up my cities and economy, playing heavily diplomatic/economic focused. While I'm not blitzing around the map, its actually worked out really well and my vassals have even taken territory on their own. A really fun change of pace from just conquering and blitzing everywhere.
