Confused on stockpile items

Ok I made a stockpile to place plants and brewed items but they keep placing the plump helmets on the pile but not in rock pots or barrels. Why is this and how do I make it that these items get put in pots and or barrels?

P.S. I have pots and barrels in inventory...

Pots/barrels have to be assigned to the stockpile to be used in it which is the default if making a Food stockpile, but not when making an Animal stockpile and then changing it to a Food one. If that's been done (your description wasn't exactly clear), they may nevertheless place stuff outside of barrels and move them inside later. The No Mix Food order may also prevent storage in pots due to a lack of empty pots and of pots with the kind of item in it, but the option defaults to Mix. All pots being full and a new one not yet being moved to the stockpile is another reason.
