Link - low budget 'boardgame' is surprisingly good
« on: April 23, 2016, 08:47:07 am »

Hi everyone.

I couldn't resist a 4 euro offer on Steam for a new game called 'Link'.
I have played through 3 games, and take another after posting this, as it is surprisingly good.  :)

The setup is that you start with 3 survivors in a shelter on an ice planet. You will then have to upgrade the rooms to produce resources and go on tactical missions to lower the threat level (that will otherwise result in a very dangerous base attack).

Pros:
It has a strong boardgame feel. So your decisions matters alot each turn.
The tactical gameplay is deep enough that you can prepare non-trivial plans and feel good if they succed (e.g. riot gun vs ringleader).
The game balance seems excellent. Character upgrades matters, but are not game breakers.
By design a game is only supposed to take about an hour. - When starting a game you select 3 objectives, and you win the game when they are done. It is possible to select some long term objectives, but they are hard.
There is an 'unlock' mechanism that let you increase the pool of suvivors that you select your starting 3 from.

Cons:
It runs a a low fixed resolution. (You can press Alt+Enter to have fullscreen.)
It looks like a game from the 90es.

All in all I get the feeling that it has been a petproject for the developer for a long time, so it is impossible to move the code up to todays standards, but he still wants to publish it. So the low price is fair, and I can only recommend this (quite rough) diamond for the excellent game design.

The looks... actually give an old Fallout 2 look to the whole thing. I like older generation aesthetics, but not the clunkier UI of most. I would definitely give this a shot though. :D
