DF Worldgen benchmark
« on: April 17, 2016, 07:12:47 am »

I'm going to upgrade my PC by a huge degree soon, and I want to know exactly how much it improves, since I really have no idea. I never really do that kind of stuff. I could calculate a billion Pi digits before and after the upgrade, but A) I would have no idea what to make of the results, since I never really did that before, and B) because I want a more elaborate plan. Calculating Pi is too simple. :P

So my plan is to ask a bunch of people to generate DF worlds at some very specific settings, and tell me how long it took.

Would that, in any way, accurately give me an idea of what to expect of my upgrade, and how good the upgrade really was compared to the expectations?

The best way to demonstrate it to him is take a save of 40 year old fortress with 150 dwarves in it on a good sized embark with a volcano that just breached the circus and install it on his gaming rig and watch it bring his rig to its knees.
