The combat in the Kickstarter looks very realistic, I can appreciate the way they're depicting sword fights here, as duels instead of slash fests. That said, it looks clunky as all hell! I suspect it's a bit slow while they try to figure how to make it work, mechanically. :v

Am i the only one who realised that the fight seem to be quick time event? I mean in the trailer at the end, something flashed on the screen and i investigated... Press blabla for perrfect block... It was too quick to appear and disapear for it to be the tutorial or something like that, evefruckting else was marvelous and had me hyped up bad.. till i saw the tooltips thingy, now im a bit scared to be honest.
There's no bloody way they'd try to get away with QTEs in sword combat. There's no way someone could be so retarded as to excise all player control from combat in a medieval game, and it wouldn't work if you were fighting from horseback. The tooltip you saw was probably a notification you can choose to enable to help you learn to time your blocks, like the autoblock button in Mount and Blade.

PTW. Should be good if the combat system isn't tedious/QTE based. I mean, most tactical combat systems technically are 'quick time events' like the old Severance Blade of Darkness/Dark Souls, I mean, timing is everything isn't it? Just don't make it obnoxious, predictable and unfun.

I'm liking what they've shown of the combat so far, if it's somewhat rudimentary. It looks kinda Mount & Blade-y right now, which I can totally dig.

The thing about QTEs is that you respond to an event at a pre-defined time with one pre-defined action. Essentially it's a linear action sequence, branching if you're lucky, and normal gameplay is like an emergent sandbox with an uncountable amount of possible states.

Shadow of Mordor has an entire combat system built on QTEs.

In my mind, QTE's were so named because of how similar they are to making a choice and watching a QuickTime movie.

Anyone in here played any of the alpha?

That's a fantasy game..? "Medieval" implies a historical element. :v

I see what you mean, but the game is even in the first person. I don't expect that they'd betray everyone's expectations of M&B combat by resorting to QTEs. At the very least if they can't make it work they'd have Elder Scrolls style bash n' block combat, which would be disappointing.

One of my other Warband-player friends lost a looot of interest in the game after hearing that you could just hold down a button to block.

Does the tech alpha have any of that sword fighting in there?  I've looked up two videos so far, and all I've seen is that it has a very pretty village wherein you can wander around and MAYBE do boring chores to make money to shoot a bow.

No sword fighting...just archery.

It is really more of a stability/graphics type test...the NPCs do their daily schedule stuff and you can talk to them about basic stuff. Not a whole lot going on. It is pretty good looking and fairly stable though.

Rise from the dead! The beta's out now. I tried a friend's copy of it, and it seems interesting, but not really groundbreaking yet. I only played for half an hour or so, but here's my first impressions:

The combat seems to be the big draw for people, but the swordplay is a little janky at the moment. I can see it being fun fighting against single enemies, but I don't know how it would scale up to multiple at a time. Didn't get to try archery or anything yet though. The best thing about the combat is how well people react to hits, it actually feels like your sword has connected with them, which is nice.

The voiceacting's kinda eh. Nothing to write home about, that's for sure.

There's horses and stuff, and you can fall off your horse, but I'm not sure exactly how. I was rushing through a forest at full speed, and didn't fall off, but when I walked against a tree for a bit, I did, so I dunno.

There's a kinda rudimentary crime system in there so far, you can attack villagers and stuff and they will react accordingly, pretty standard stuff.

The world in the beta is not too big, but I'm assuming it'll be bigger in the full release.

Finally, the biggest problem is the graphics. They are unoptimized as fuck. My buddy's got a pretty beefy rig, but even on medium settings he was only getting 25FPS or so, with textures taking forever to pop in and lagging to shit. The game itself doesn't look too bad, it's nothing amazing but it's still good, but the big problem is how unoptimized it is.

Oh, you also can't rebind keys yet, but I'm hoping that'll be changed.

These are just some quick first impressions of the beta. It seems like it'll be an alright game, but nothing too groundbreaking. Feel free to ask any questions and I'll see if I can answer them.
