Possible?

So just had an idea...but not sure it's possible... I typically use 3x3 staircases with my middle square left alone

Typically I use these areas to place artifacts to get good thoughts by those using the stairs in heavily trafficked areas.

So here's my thought...If I do these same stairs...but channel out the middle square could I then have water come in from above the topmost stairwell (via a channel) and have it cascade down the channels (hopefully misting the stairs...but not flooding).  Or if I widen my stairs to allow fortifications around the misting channel would mist come through the fortifications, again without flooding my stairs.

No, they went to Hel, where they lead a bleak existence in cold and darkness. Valhalla is reserved for valiant warriors.

It should mist the stairs if you channel out the middle square and put in a grate or floor bars, but don't quote me on that.

In either case, you'll need a drain of some sort at the bottom to prevent flooding.

Quietust, what would we ever do without you and your endless knowledge of v0.23a?
I was going to say "fail spectacularly", but you guys seem to be doing a great job of that already.

Yes, I do exactly that in most forts. It works great. To make it work:

- Put a floor grate on every level so nobody risks falling.
- Depressurize the water source at the top. (a hallway with one diagonal-only path at the top will limit the water to a manageable level falling down.)
- Have an adequate drain at the bottom. One very good solution is to have the bottom drain area be 2 z-levels tall. The top z-level is just a 3x3 open square below the bottommost grate. Below that is a 3x3 square and a 1-wide hallway leading to fortifications carved in the map edge. The fact that it's 2 z-levels tall means that water pressure will instantly carry newly-fallen water to the drain and there's no risk of flooding.

Funnel water in at the top and assign a pump stack traveling back to the topmost reservoir its falling down from (I guess it depends on height, the further the water has to travel, the more water that will be required to promote a continuous stream).

I like using the 3x3 design like yours personally for my stairwells. Leaves a nifty engraving/column/statue space in the middle for decorative purposes such as a 'hello welcome to Uristville', 'no gobbo's allowed' etc.

If the water source is infinite (like an aquifer), you can drain the water using a Portable Drain instead of leading it off the map.
