Not sure whats going on here. Looks like there is a tonne of ores missing from the list. Its usually a few pages long, but the screen shot below is all I've got.

Give us more information, including but not limited to any mods or utilities you have installed.

Graphics/tile sets also count as mods.  Reactions missing from the smelter can be (but is not always) caused by corrupted raws, which can be caused by installing a graphics set for the wrong version of Dwarf Fortress.

Another possible cause is extracting a new version of DF in the same directory as an old version of DF.  Never do that.  If you want to upgrade, extract the new version in a new directory, and then copy or move the data/save/region* directory into the new version's data/save/ directory.

It's pretty standard: PeridexisErrant's Starter Pack 0.42.05-r01. The tileset I use is spacefox from the pack.

I have it installed on my dropbox and play it on a number of computers. I doubt that could have caused such a specific raw issue, it seems awfully specific.

Maybe it is a bug in the pack.

Have you tried building a smelter in a new world to see if it has pig iron?

Rather long shot: Have you checked your fortress is actually controlled by dwarves? In a bugged save where the embarkers were elves instead a number of things didn't work, and I think steel production was one of them.

I noticed similar when I built forges early on in a recent fort.   (Which died solely due to update issues.)

The thing is that later on, once I'd bought 'n sold a few bars, mined a few new ores, etc., etc. the list became re-populated.  At the time I thought something along the lines of "Oh, it's like the kitchen now.  Ores are added as the dorfs discover them."

From the above replies, I gather that this isn't the case?

Either way, it sorted itself out over time...  although I'll admit I wasn't really paying attention (Taverns!  Libraries!  Temples!) so I can't say when or how.

That was my experience a few times, too.  Critical metal missing from the list, but hadn't actually mined any of it yet; by the time I did have the ore boulders available, it had been added as a valid smelting job.  (0.40.x rather than 0.42.x, but principle probably still stands)

Thanks for the tips.. I've nothing Steel in my fort at the moment. Next dorf caravan I'll check out the list and see if there is anything steel.

Bit of a weird issue. I might try create a new world and see if the issue persists. Maybe this world just doesn't have Steel!!

I've started making Iron Shields instead. They might just have to go without, those poor bastards....
