Now I get it! It's instruments!
« on: February 18, 2016, 09:16:31 am »

So watching the singing and dancing and goings on in the taverns, I noticed that dwarves would often "Simulate This" and "Simulate That".

Initially, I paid it no heed, figuring that it was some manner of narrative, and they were playing the part of historical figures in that narrative.

Not so!

Turns out they are singing a capella, simulating instruments!

Who thunk it?

Reading his name would trigger it. Thinking of him would trigger it. No other circumstances would trigger it- it was strictly related to the concept of Bill Clinton entering the conscious mind.

Keep observing and do some !!Science!!.  See the strength of the happy thoughts from performing while "simulating," then give them the real instrument and see if theyre any happier playing it.

If you play Adventurer mode, you'll see plenty of NPCs complaining about how horrid those people simulating instruments are. At their best, they're beat-boxing or performing acapella, but at their worst they're 'making a shameful mockery' of the instrument.

Imagine, if you will, you begin to perform a certain song. It needs a singer, a trumpet and a violin. You're happy to play your violin, and Imush over there is happy to lend you his singing voice, but along comes Urist, making some horrid noise with his voice as he basically makes fart noises where the trumpet should be.

Can we blame Urist in this situation? Sure, he could have kept his bearded lips shut, but perhaps the true culprit is the metalsmith who hasn't finished those 300 gold statues of yourself that you ordered and hasn't got the time to forge a trumpet. You don't expect them to listen to a song without someone at least trying to fill the gap, do you?

Now imagine if you start playing a song that requires half an orchestra ... and nobody brought an instrument.

 :'(

EDIT: If you've seen that episode of Cromartie High School, where they can't figure out the name of a song everyone is humming, the performance at the end of that is what I imagine some of these 'simulations' sound like.
