Question about getting info on abandoned forts
« on: February 27, 2016, 12:15:19 pm »

So I started a fort in dwarven civilization A, retired it and started another fort under dwarven civilization B.  Immediately I started to get visitors from the first fort.  The visitors were both dwarves who originally were scholars, and human/dwarf mercs who I developed and equipped quite nicely.  I think this is awesome but now I wonder if that original fort got overrun.  Its in another civilization so I dont get news on it.  From what I can tell... if I go into legends mode to get info on it, I have to first retire my current fort, and I dont want to do that.  Is there another way to get info on it?

Copy the world. Retire the fort in one and open legends.

Worlds can be found in data => save => world1, etc.

So the former mercs that are migrants in your current fortress were already part of the civilization you are playing now? Perhaps you'll get some of your old fort's residents as visitors now.

I wouldn't know how to check your previous fort's state. You could copy your save, and retire that copy so you can look into legends. It helps if you remember your fort's / group's name.

Or you could try making engravings / images of your previous fort in your current fort, see if you can get some actuality reports from that.

Copy the save (just in case if you're using DFHack). If you're using DFHack you can load the fortress normally, use the DFHack command open-legends, and then either view directly in legends mode, or use the DFHack command "exportlegends info" to export data for e.g. legends viewer. Then crash DF, as I've heard exiting legends mode and return to fortress mode can cause save corruption that bites you half a year later.
One thing I've noticed is that an active fortress doesn't seem to be fully integrated into legends mode (strange: using hackery isn't supported completely seamlessly!), so legends viewer won't show graphical representations of your dorfs on the map (but they're visible as existing in your fortress) and my dead civ is presented as having no members.

If you're not using DFHack you'll retire the fortress in the copy and open the copy in legends mode. When you're done you can delete the copy.

I didnt just have mercs from the old fort, but dwarven migrant/citizens too... a part of its core populace.  I followed your guyses instructions and copied/loaded it into the LNPs legends viewer.  I couldnt figure out specific info on the site.  I think I might try to reclaim the site or visit it as an adventurer.

If you're using Legends Viewer you should be able to click on the map and then enable sites in the lower left corner. That should allow you to click on the site to get info about it, but I it might still not be the info you're looking for...

Wow thats it, thats exactly what I was looking for.  Every bit of info on my retired fort... well... info on everything in the world.  The detail is amazing.  Family tree and events and everything I was looking for.  That fort was on an evil glacier and was bound to fail.  Now I have to figure out how to keep a fort alive after I retire it.  I wonder if having siege engines and military training for everyone would help.

What I've gathered from forum posts is that the only thing that matters is military training, and possibly equipment. Siege engines probably do nothing but act as decorations. Traps, drawbridges, or completely bricked up entranced do nothing.
Worldgen battles have been described as duels of one-one one battles, where the victor goes on to the next one (basically defenders stand in one column and attackers in an opposing one, and the front character of each line battles each other. The loser's line advances one step forward...
I suspect world battles behave the same post world gen. If someone actually knows how these things work they may provide better answers, though.
