Community Preservation - [URGENT]
« on: January 16, 2016, 10:08:23 am »

Fellow dorfers, we have a situation on our hands here on the forum homelands.

Stories, even from the hall of legends, are having their pictures deleted. I'm hoping someone can explain why, but as far as I know they're going to be gone forever.

We should focus our efforts on preserving these stories with their images and putting them into PDF, but if I'm completely wrong about all this feel free to tell me.

The images going away is likely due to file-hosting sites removing them after their standard period of time, nothing truly uncommon.

I suppose you could contact the people from those threads and ask them if they still have the photos and pull it all up into a PDF. Some of them might even be on the Dwarf Fortress Wiki, as particularly legendary examples oft find their way there.

The only way to prevent this is to using a permanent image host, so like a personal server of some sort you have full controll over. You could also compress and upload the images from your journals as you create them, to a site like DFFD, so then they would be available for later viewers ( perhaps reuploaded and editing the links if you want to be thourough).

The sad thing about the internet is the speed at which things simply fail to exist, though you could argud some positives come from this.

I recommend Cubeupload as a permanent image host, it's simple and with no strings attached.
Probably couldn't handle entering mainstream usage though, I doubt that the site turns a profit.

Hey. Normally I lurk here but I finally registered to respond to your post. If no other solutions work, I can offer space on the server of a site/forum where I am head admin. You would just have to register and I'd give you your own section where you could upload each file as post attachments so they'd be hosted there.

However I think you can do the same on the DF/Magma wiki. Some stories are already immortalized there, like the elf king of the dwarves and Boatmurdered.

Hello All,
A friend who usually goes by the name of Blue told me about your present situation with stuff going poof. As it happens I own my own home built server and hate when good stuff goes poof. I will soon be adding 5 terabytes to my dedicated server  so if you need a safe place to hang out I can hook you up. I can also show you safe stable places to put stuff on line. If you are interested let me know by replying to this or contacting me directly at ulab1@juno.com. As a example of my work here is 1 of my sites complete with permanent on line board. The style of HTML I use can show up on anything that can get on line.http://www.unrealitylab.dtdns.net/ I am known there as Superman or my real name of John D Koen. I will be looking forward to your responses.
