Why won't they eat?
« on: March 22, 2007, 06:28:00 pm »

Just a simple question from a not-so-noob. I started a fortress a few days ago and just got through my first winter, easy-enough. Anyways, before that winter I grew many Plump Helmets and had over 100 stored in my larder. Anyways...my dwarves decided not to eat the plump helmets, or well some of them. My poor metalsmith, apparantly unable to open a barrel, went around eating vermin while the other dwarves feasted on raw plump helmets. So...poor metalsmith just starved to death, and wondering why the hell he didn't eat any of the plump helmets I had comfortably stored in barrels in my larder...Or why other dwarves are not drinking from my well.

Are you using the latest version?  There was a bug with eating from barrels fixed recently.

It used to be that when a dwarf ate from the barrel, he would claim the barrel and prevent another dwarf from using it to take a plump helmet from it. This problem can be solved by making some tables and chairs to make a dining room (make sure dwarves dont share tables; two chairs should never be near the same table) and using the latest version of DF.

Yeah I figured it was a bug, it seems to have fixed it's self out and I got a bunch of new migrants to easily replace the poor metalworker.
