I think in 5 years there'll likely be one of what I think are probably the two most anticipated features since the creation of Dwarf Fortress. There'll be either most of the magic system, or most of the army arc. The way development is currently going I can see either one being completed in 5 years, though probably not both, I suppose it is a possibility. I can't wait to be able to either conquer the world with my army of dwarves, or conquer the world as a very powerful magic using adventurer.

Its a feature. Impregnating booze is a planned tech tree for dwarves and this is a sneak peek at it.

I joined this forum in 2007 and played on and off through the years and only recently restarted playing DF again. A lot has changed yet so much is the same that its taken me very little to jump back in. I'm actually surprised of how much hasn't changed. I am really enjoying being back but I wish things like throwing prisoners into pits was easier(its always been annoying) and I am getting a hang on the military, it seems zombies are indestructible and my militia won't spar. Fun times!

Disagree. Certain bugfixes and optimisations are worth it, if affected features wont change for many years (that is usually case with any single feature in DF). Also many optimisations and fixes will be useful even after changes.

Premature optimisation does not apply here. I already explained why I consider it worthwile and I wont repeat it again. *shrug* Enjoy game while it is still bearably slow and still not-too-crashy.

One thing I would like to see, is that when you retire a fortress, things stay where they are and the dwarves assigned to various tasks actually keep doing them! I tried visiting my old fortress as an adventurer, but every item was thrown pell-mell around the perimeter, they didn't use stockpiles, the dwarves were just standing there not doing anything, etc etc.

Building a labyrinth full of traps and treasure for my adventurer to conquer has been a long-term fantasy of mine, but as the game stands it's not possible.

So, a more integrated fortress and adventure mode I guess is my wish.

In five years DF will be entirely an ARPG with fortress mode a distant fond memory.

Funded by in-app purchases.

I kid.

I agree that DF won't look that different, but with more cores/threads available (which DF won't be using so much) I think the overlays could look incredible. Something like Armok Vision with 3d critters and a GUI.

Can't tell if a joke or a complaint about toadys focus on adventure mode.

Well, what more can you really do with fortress mode anyway?  A fortress doesn't have that many members, in adventure mode you can probably eventually take over whole kingdoms.  Fortress mode I'd say is far more complete at this point.

1. UI Overhaul.
2. Challenge-generating AI.
3. Siege mechanics and diplomacy overhaul.
4. Squad and military improvements (squad formations, teamwork and waking up sleeping squadmates).
5. Bath-houses, sewage, latrines, laundry and clothing repair.
6. Dynamic economic system with rents, pay, dwarves paying other dwarves to make them crafts, etc etc.

There, five or six years of imagination. I can dream.

Today has said, many times, that there will be no sewage.

Though, I do imagine the artifact and trade overhaul to be complete. Possibly working on the army arc.

Mostly the former, bit of tongue-in-cheek on the latter.
