Dwarven Phalanx
« on: January 17, 2016, 01:21:17 pm »

I believe that it would be rather interesting to have melee weapons that can reach several tiles away, like a pike. This would allow for a squad of dwarves to easily hold a small passageway from enemies with minimal danger, as all assaults would be stopped before they reached the actual militia. The actual weapons would probably be entities that are constantly in front of the dwarf that would trigger a fight when it reaches, yet the enemy would not be able to attack, though I am not sure this is possible as my knowledge of the inner workings of DF is limited at best.

We have a rich tradition of percussion instruments as well, all of which are based around a musician smacking variously sized hollow rocks.
It was quite brutal actually. Who knew you could suffer major head trauma from undergarments?

I feel like something would have to be done to reflect the weaknesses of such a weapon, namely that it'd be almost useless when/if an enemy got inside of its swing, or had to operate in a tight space...

Toady mentioned something along those lines here in Transcript 21. Just search for spear and that should take you to the part where he discusses distance. That's something I look forward to.

Right now the available polearms (spear, pike, halberd) are just stand-in weapons. Being able to manage space/distance would/will make these weapons more useful.
