Author Topic: Needy/Dreaming Dwarves could do craftswork/training without prompting.  (Read 1865 times)

I'm guessing this is probably planned, but with Dwarves who need to be creative or practice a skill, it'd be interesting for them to automatically do a job or several at a craftsdwarf's or mason's or blacksmith's workshop or the like, the materials they use could be dependent on how extravagant they are, a more extravagant dwarf would choose gold or the like while a more down to earth Dwarf might choose something else.  Likewise, for dwarves that desire to practice a martial art, they could go over and train with whatever military squad you might have set up, or even just do individual training by themselves.  Dwarves that do craftswork could help alleviate player micromanaging of products as more and more things gain utility, and dwarves that go training would help players pick out the more martially inclined dwarves for their squads.  Both would help handle micromanagement of Dwarven needs.

I really wish that Dwarves would act like this.
I hate micromanagement, but wish the best for my dwarves, and the game would seem much more realistic if Dwarves would do the work they wanted to do.
Maybe even doing work they like much more efficiently.
To save on micromanagement, maybe Dwarves could petition the player for a job change?

I agree, and as near as I can tell Toady is also hoping to place more control into the hands of the individual dwarves. Now that we have these deeper motivations and needs, this sort of compulsive creation would fit right in!

Sort of like mini-moods?

To prevent an obnoxious amount of materials getting used for things like -steel toy axe- or +platinum stepladder+ then a new option for stockpiles would be good to designate them for being either "free to use" or "work orders only."

Now that you put it like that, strange moods could end up being removed, and instead a spectrum of will and extravagance forms.
Possessed moods would end up being related to mythology when that comes in.

Hi guys,

I think this is a great idea! Toady talked about something similar to this in one of the DF talks about temples-he was talking about devout dwarves setting up their little shrines in their rooms or all around the hallways. But no real conclusion.

That makes me feel it would open up an extension of this to allow some display cases or mounting of items as fixed decorations in the fortress. I always liked the idea of hanging a totem on the wall, or having a display case with jewel-encrusted scepters to inspire awe in all the traditionalist dwarves. Perhaps the player could have this ability as well. Also, dwarves could autonomously do some crafting and decorating to fulfill their own needs. All of this feels closer now that theoretically extravagant dwarves can grab trinkets for themselves. Imagine all of those figurines that used to sit in the stockpile as little shrines in Urist's room, made by him in his spare time.

I could imagine either they are just allowed to build in their own rooms, or else the player could have a toggle on any zone to "allow dwarves decoration." Perhaps a cleaning designation could clear out unwanted decoration, while causing an unhappy thought in the original creator.

The stockpile toggle for work orders only sounds like a really elegant solution to me.

Another possible way of implementing the auto crafting would be to have a toggle option in the workshop to "allow creative crafting" which would let needy dwarves jump in and make something at the workshop if their needs demand it. You could control the materials used via linked stockpiles.

For example, at the beginning of play you could allow creative crafting on your one and only forge so the work orders and creative crafting mix and share the forge as needed. Later, once production ramps up, you could have a forge exclusively for ordered production linked to a gold bar stockpile and a creative crafting workshop linked to a lead bar stockpile.

Eh.... this would eat up resources on "junk," tie up critical workshops and cause delays from people messing around, or just require more micromanage to offset the already existing micromanage.  Set up shops and set up materials to play with (would they just make crafts, or anything that can use the creative attribute?) At best, its micromanagement to fix micromanagement of a non-critical problem (just drown them in booze and engrave their room, then cover your fort in bling'ed out statues).

I don't see the micromanaging you are referring to. You set up a forge/workshop linked to a stockpile with worthless materials (lead bars or junk stone), fill the job list with suspended jobs to keep the manager out, and allow creative crafting only on that shop. It'd be set and forget. It wouldn't matter if they create junk because they're only using junk materials. I imagine that the priority would be about the same as listening to poetry in the tavern so it shouldn't hold up any important jobs. And you'd disallow creative crafting on the critical workshops to avoid delays there.

With the newly added needs system, it's not just enough to keep your dwarves happy (and drunk) you need to meet their needs too or they will start working ineffectively on their other tasks.

You still have to set up the workshops and meticulously fill out (and keep filled) the stockpile with enough junk materials. 

Also, I've never seen a dwarf get so upset they couldn't make trinkets, that it impacted their effectiveness.  Its very easy to have a legendary dining room, and just about the only visitors I get are from performers.  Then you engrave their rooms and add some furniture (cabinet+coffer/chest) to it.  Sprinkle statues around the living quarters, main hallways, and stairwell, and you never have emotional problems. 

The only time I've seen someone get the down arrow from depressed mood, was when I locked a vampire in an empty temple (was a long-term resident, so I couldn't control nor assign her to burrows).  A couple years later she was all miffed about being bored.  A couple years after that I introduced her to a forgotten beast and that was the end of that.

I'd like to suggest that the kind of crafting a dwarf chooses to do on their own be set by:

1. If they have a craft enabled, do that.
2. If they have a moodable skill, do that.
3. If neither, leave the need unfulfilled.

On a similar note, if dwarves start getting distracted by being unable to do any military training, it would be nice if they would go and attend to that even if they're not assigned to a squad.

Maybe militant dwarves could form unofficial militias or gangs with their friends and family? It could even be a stepping stone to extended relations like clans and political blocs.

Even better, a "state" workshop vs a "civilian" workshop.

State Workshops:
*Default workshop
*Only player-set creations

And with a new button, a workshop can be designated as a "civilian" workshop.
Civilian Workshops:
*Allow any civilian to use it as they need or want
*Create random objects

That way we're all happy.
