Invaders enters my walled fort
« on: February 24, 2016, 10:46:19 am »

Hey everybody, i really need some help here...
I built a 3 stories high building surrounding my fort entrance.
Everything is walled all around.
Put my archer squad on 2nd floor with fortifications.
Soon as the invaders came, they just jumped right in my fort.
How can this happen?
Any ideas?
Please...

They climbed over the walls.

regardless, the slime shooter will be completed, come hell or high water, which are both entirely plausible setbacks at this point.

Yes, there is a floor on every floor.

A follow-up question then:
Are walls made from blocks (smooth) or boulders (rough)?

As said, walls can be climbed, and some goblins are very good climbers. They won't climb unless they see a target, but you were waving juicy x-bow dorfs in front of them... Once they're on top of the wall they can climb down the other side (or use the stairs you probably left when building the floors).

Climbing doesn't destroy walls, and, in fact, only a cave-in or deconstruction can destroy them. You can block climbing by jutting out two tiles from the wall 2 levels above the ground (a floor jutting out one tile is actually enough, but it looks silly, and doesn't stop dorfs from trying to climb down to engage the enemy swinging the x-bow). Also, tree branches can be climbed and used to enter the top of a wall.

And, finally, if you don't have a complete roof fliers have no problem getting in...

Yeah rough walls are quickly scalable if the climber has something that will draw him directly over the wall, like treasure marksdwarves.  Likewise your marksdwarves have a good chance of jumping off the wall to brawl in melee if they aren't locked into their fortification corridor.  The most consistent way to prevent climbers is with either a smooth wall with an overhang on the top level, or a moat going one or two tiles underneath a smoothed wall preventing ground access to the wall.  It may additionally be neccessary to put fortifications and a roof over the structure, both to prevent your dwarves jumping and to keep them clear of flying threats.
