Strange miner positioning for channeling
« on: January 09, 2016, 06:11:06 pm »

Hey guys,

this might turn out to be a very trivial issue. Here's an example of what I mean:

x o x         x = current z level
x o x         o = already channeled (1z lower)
x o x

Let's assume that my dwarf stands on the yellow tile and just finished channeling out one of the middle tiles. Next, I want him to move to the right and continue channeling out the red tile. What I would expect to see is a simple one-tile move to the right (and 1z down). But what happens instead is a vertical move (down 1z) and then another move to the right, positioning the dwarf one tile below/above the tile to be channeled. Why is that? That's just wastful movement to me and I am sure that dwarves used to be able to channel an area that was 1z above them. Am I missing something here?

From what i understand, dwarves only dig (or interact) with tiles that are besides them on the same z-level or directly above or below them (Only happening with stairs) I never saw a dwarf interact with something in such situations as yours, because truthfully i don't think it would be physically possible either. When have you seen it happen before. I sure didn't see it in DF2014.

IIRC, you can achieve the result you're expecting by designating a ramp to be mined one z-level below the red X.

great, that's exactly what I was looking for! must've been changed at some point since I only used d-h before...

Physically possible or not, dwarves can dig ramps vertically-diagonally (here's one well-known use). They prefer, however, to path next to the dig tile if possible, which is likely why you haven't seen it before.
