Trying to get into Warhammer 40K on limited budget
« on: December 28, 2015, 08:58:09 pm »

So, IDK if this is supposed to be here or in other games, but I have a question:

What is the cheapest army to field for a newb in WH40K?

One made out of cardboard. 40K doesn't do "cheap".

But if you're looking for actual advice, the general consensus for the cheapest legal army would be an extreme low model count Grey Knights army purchased entirely on EBay. If you want to paint your own models and choose what to play, you're probably going to be looking at $250-300 as the minimum cost of entry, and that for nothing more than a 1000 or 1500 point army.

1. Game Parameters -> Reduced Height Windows.
2. Lock taskbar to the right side of your desktop.
3. Run Resize Enable

Agreed with FD. GWS just isn't cheap to get into period. You're on the hook for $30 to $40+ for the Codex, the $150 to $300 for a real army, and endless amounts of money for paints and other stuff after that.

It's too bad GWS doesn't do their specialist games anymore. They were way cheaper to play while still getting to be in the same universe.

To answer your question, your best bet is to find someone selling the army you want. They'll want a premium since they put in the time to assemble and paint it all, but you may be able to negotiate the price down. I still wouldn't expect to pay less than $200 for a 1000 to 1500ish point army.

I shouldn't laugh but yeah I totally laughed.

Yeah unfortunately... Warhammer 40k is just about the most expensive models game in existence to the point where people have made similar games with the sole intention of making a cheaper game (and is actually gaining popularity last I checked)

So I'm looking at $300 for a half-decent Imperial Guard army with a Leman Russ or two?

I might be able to PM you a decent army list or two, NOW I might accidentally email you a 6th & 7th edition  rule book and a codex by accident, but it was entirely by accident understand?

Age of Sigmarines is semi cheap when it comes to entry. Altho that's the new and "improved" fantasy battle and not actual WH40k despite looking pretty warhammerish.

Actual 40k tho? Yeah you are looking at upwards of 200$
