Are werecreatures a lot more dangerous these days?
« on: December 28, 2015, 11:55:11 am »

My 5-member squad (2 dwarves, 3 humans) took on a werehyena child today. I was expecting my civilians to all run from danger, so I didn't bother with a burrow alert. Big mistake. A bunch of them waded into the fray and 2 human soldiers and 5 dwarf civilians died :(. Three civilians were marked as possible weres, and after they healed up, my remaining 3 soldiers stood watch. One of the civilians transformed and proceeded to tear apart my soldiers, 2 of whom had steel weapons and armor. These guys had about 3 years of training under their belts, and they sparred occasionally. I should have double-checked my soldiers' stats before I abandoned, but are werecreatures a lot stronger these days? Not that I'm complaining! I'm just surprised, as they were total pushovers before that barely caused me to blink. I'm going to be a lot more careful about defense and burrow alerts for my next fort!

1) Civilians chasing after beasts because they're drunk, fearless and vengeful is an amusing new addition to 42.x. Possibly due to be toned down a bit soon.

2) Were they actually sparring or did it just say 'sparring' and they were standng around doing nothing? Something to do with them being drunk and overly-cautious makes them freeze instead of sparring. To be fixed in next update. Result being that 3 years of training doesn't make an axe-lord anymore.

Ah, thanks for the info! I noticed that my soldiers just stood in place while sparring, instead of actively moving around during the bout. Looks like the werehyena took on some relatively easy targets.

Just started a new fort, after 1st winter were kowala shows up, kills injures 4 of my 11 dorfs, infects a total of 7 of them. The fort is pretty much dead before it got off the ground. I'm probably going to clean it with adventurers and then do a reclaim though as I like the site.

I had a werepangolin mow down an entire immigrant wave of 27 T_T It spawned less than a second after the wave started. I save scummed. Upon immigrant wave arrival, he appeard again, with the same results. Scummed again, had small military ready for this one, but was barely able to stop it XD.

on a different fort now. I have a were giraffe infestiation. I tried assigning war leopards and dogs to the hospital to see which of the injured turned and then dispatch them, one turned killed all the war animals plus a dozen other people. I now have even more injured and no idea who is infected. Is the only solution to confine all my wounded to a burrow and leave them to die?

You don't need to leave them to die. If they're only moderately injured, brick them up in separate cells well before the next full moon. Release those who do not turn, and handle the rest appropriately. If some are badly wounded, brick them up in their hospital beds/traction racks, separated from each other, again well before the next full moon.
If you brick them all in together the uninfected ones will be killed by the infected ones, which is the reason they should be separated from each other. Note that weres are building destroyers, so a door will not keep them in place (might work with single tile cells, due to the way building destroyers work).

Got some revenge in my new fort. This time, I embarked on a flux site with 2 soldiers, a weapon/armorsmith, and 24 bars of copper. I had them training right from the start in full armor and made sure to trade for iron and make steel asap.

A wereshrew appeard in my fort. I managed to kill it. However the infection spread. And till I could get it under control 5 dwarves were infected and 15 dead. Note: WereSHREW. Later on a wereelk appeared. It somehow caused a massbrawl of my dwarves. 17 dwarves died and two were infected. I locked them away in the same corridor as my wereshrews. They started to fight. Now just the two wereelks are left.

So yes, they appear to be stronger than in the past. I remember those werecreatures to be mostly an easy kill in V0.34.

I made the mistake of not forcing my soldiers to wear their gauntlets and boots when a weregila monster attacked. It killed about 10 dwarves total, two of whom were soldiers and the last soldier was wounded (that was a sizable part of my population at that point).

Luckily I didn't have to worry about infection since everyone who got bitten died soon after (maybe a side effect of gila monster venom and a low level of training), and I managed to get a new military running once the next migrant wave arrived...

Stealth Weremammoths are the stuff of night terrors. They can sneak around like they were kobold sized, and kill without breaking stealth. It's like if the Hulk grew a winter coat and went through Navy Neal training.

Well, since v0.40, anyway. in v0.34, they tended to change back to normal before they even entered your fort.
