Irrigating huge tracts of land
« on: December 31, 2015, 05:59:47 am »

What is the best way to irrigate aboveground land en-masse without using the bucket method (which is tedious af).

I want to start some massive farm-work, and I hate the fact everything is extremely patchy, I just want big tracts of farmable land which I can use to supersize my booze production with all the colourful types of alcohol those crazy Humans are raving about.

Bring river/aquifier/pond water above with channels/pumps.
Though above ground areas often don't need to be watered first but if you are into aquadects for style, go for it.

There is a longstanding bug though: "The yellow warning message, No mud/soil for farm, Mud is left by water, is displayed on all above-ground tiles, regardless of whether the farm will function. This warning may be ignored. Tiles that actually lack mud or soil are excluded from the construction entirely with a red warning message (either Blocked or Needs soil or mud)." (source)

You only need to irrigate above-ground tiles if you constucted some floors or something.  A bit more detail about your setup would help us understand what you're doing.

It sounds like that just want to clear out any plants or random patches of rock above ground.

My personal suggestion is to channel down one layer and just farm there.

Its a feature. Impregnating booze is a planned tech tree for dwarves and this is a sneak peek at it.

Some ground contains patches of rock that do not allow farming. I don't know if they support farming after muddying, or if you have to smooth the rocks first.

vjmdhzgr's proposal is easier than doing it at the top level (and easier to protect by just flooring it over as well).

Got a soil layer? Dig it out, channel a hole in the ceiling, pave over it, and put the farm underneath it.

I'm going to tell you the simplest thing I can think of: go to the wiki. They have some pretty effective irrigation techniques, and they're quite entertaining to try to build too :P

Note: You may have to Supah SizeTM the designs in here.

Manually-operated screw pump and a water source. Pay attention to where the operator will be standing so he doesn't have to stop pumping.

Screw pumps but building the pieces, putting them together, then flooding the appropriate squares is probably going to be more tedious than the bucket method.

Although resource intensive, building a elevated farm by channelling and dumping water from murky pools and channelled river connections is one way to irrigate if you invest in a seperate walkway that is almost entirely safe, and ensure that the construction is roofed over with constructed solid blocks (engineer well enough with reservoir screw pump ladders and you can build a tower of farms though you might need some plumbing at the end via a constructed chute to divert it to somewhere safe if you have a lot of water passing through)

Here is a simple construction of a 1x7 soon to be elevated above-ground plot

Key - R - reservoir , G - wall grate, W - walls, F - Floors, S - screw-pump

 R R R
W G W
W F W
W F W
W F W
W F W
W F W
W F W
W S W
 F S F
 R R R

Thanks for all the suggestions. I'm certainly going to see if I can get some sort of aquaduct system going.
