Military training and sparring
« on: December 30, 2015, 09:36:40 am »

Sooo...my military never ever spars it seems. I had them spar like only three times in a couple of years.
They also appear to only slowly get better at their job, not being anywhere close to "a good military" even after several years of constant training.

What's going on here? How do I get them to train properly?

I do have a captain of the guard, even made them some training weapons, just in case (though I highly doubt they have any real function at the moment, since they sparred even without them that one time).

Make sure :

- You have a place designed as a barrack (from either an built armor or weapon rack)
- that barrack has training assigned to your squad (press q to select the armor/weapon rack that make the barrack, select the squad in the list and press t )
- press s to access the squad menu, press the key corresponding to the squad you want to train and press t to have it switch from the default "Sched - Inactive" to "Sched - Active/Training"

They will now go to barrack and train.

- in the military screen that you access with m , select your squad and press s  to display the schedule, there you can assign how many dwarves will train at the barrack each months, by default it's 10 (full squad) , you may or not want to edit that number depending on your fort needs

I do not use any training weapon, only real one for my squads in training, seems to have worked good so far in 42.x

Hm, yeah, I have all that. They are even in the barracks and it even says "spar" when I v over them.

It's just that - unlike in earlier versions - I only got a "Sparring"-report three times so far, which I assume means that they never actually do anything besides that stare at each other or something. That was in version 42.03 btw, I'm about to start anew in 42.04 now, so I wanted to know what I was doing wrong.

Could be a new bug if you have everything setup correctly.
I'm still running a fort i started in 42.02 so my dwarves are already highly trained, so i couldn't notice if recently a bug moved in.

For now the bug tracker is down, but would be worth reporting with a save.

It's on the front page as a bug with the current way inebriation is handled. Apparently, Toady has fixed it, but it's not in the most released patch yet. Should be in 42.05.

Yeah apparently drinking is making dwarves psychotically cautious. .
