6 miners
1 mason/woodworker
and enough booze and meat to last till migrants come

I only rarely admit migrants to be miners and only in extenuating circumstances (I lose more than 3). My original miners have to last as long as possible and they aren't permitted to do anything but mine.

I had a trog give birth while scaling a wall. Just before one of my crossdorfs loosed a bolt at her. The trog baby drowned.
They said the walls were impregnable. You didn't have to prove me wrong by giving birth on them.

Dwarves:
-Miner
-Miner
-Wood cutter
-Carpenter
-Brewer
-Record keeper
-Wood burner

Animals:
-2 cats (male and female)
-2 war dogs
-2 dogs (male and female)

Items:
-2 copper picks
-2 copper axes
-cloth (plant, silk and yarn, one of each)
-string (same as above)
-seeds (20 of each)
-spend the rest of the points on food and booze

The cloth and string are in the case of early moods requiring these.
I dont bring a mason because although stone is very plentiful, so is wood in forests, which is where I usually embark, and wood is also lighter.
Since this embark includes a lot of food and booze I leave farming for later (or never and just import food).

Hmmm, I'll have to pay more attention then.

As for armor.... I just wish bone had its own designation or was lumped with leather.  Can be such a horrendous pain trying to set up bone uniforms unless I'm missing something.

I do hope it eventually gets added to the list proper.  But setting color to white works for now, since only certain artifact-only metal armors share the color.  There's also this bug for actual bone armor uniforms (and more notably leather shields):

Bless you good Urist, Armok bless you! I like to embark in metal-poor areas, so that I can actually have a need for trading.  It forces me to be more frugal with my metal as well as explore other options besides "just metal everything."  So, a more interesting game all around.  However, I was going crazy trying to force my Urists to wear leather/bone mixes of armor so the first few squads could get armor user up while still being better than naked against early werebeasts and FBs.  If nothing else, it makes a good light-encumbrance starter uniform (can add a mail shirt instead of leather armor).

Now... if only we could get an easier way to mass produce non-standard armors for all the human poets and dancers i keep adding to my fort... I know I can tap (d)etails when hovering over a job and (f)ilter->(hu)man-> enterx2 to set the bone gauntlets to a pair of "large" ones, but it has to be done for every. single. piece.  There needs to be some sort of toggle that will switch all jobs from that leatherworkers/clotheirs/forge/craft shop to a different race.  Its especially painful trying to fish for masterwork armor for non-standard races (goblins and hippies can wear dwarven stuff).
